Render Clouds is a series of work specifically created for viewing on Baltimore’s LED Art Billboard. This ongoing series consist of images of clouds taken from popular past and present video games such as Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis and Mega Man 64 for the Nintendo 64. When displayed on the LED Art Billboard the clouds attempt to blend in with the surrounding natural environment.

Every light painting has been a study of color control, but at this point I was convinced that I understood how to make predictable patterns. I found that the non-linear control circuit that I use continued to surprise me with its complexity. This piece also called for new ideas about how to interact with light between the LED sources and the screen.

The curved shape is intended to resemble a cloth, or perhaps a curtain hanging in front of a window. The colors of the frame and the shape combine where they overlap at the top and bottom. It is an unusual type of transparency because the colors combine additively, unlike the subtractive effect that might occur with real materials.

Sleeping Gypsy – a project that was saved by breaking its mold.

The original design for this work does not resemble the final piece. After much effort to install the LEDs and build the control circuit, the design created by dividing the space between the areas of colored LEDs was not interesting. After a period of discouragement, I realized that the light could be divided differently, and I devised the moon and pyramid design, which seemed much more successful. This “failed” piece has opened up a fresh concept for approaching new work.

"Nova" is a light painting made in 2003 that uses complementary hues of blue and amber. The hues mix to white when both colors of LEDs are fully on. There are no white LEDs in this piece. Nova's four-way symmetry reflects the logic structure of the electronic circuit that drives LED fade patterns.    Size - 2' x 2' on the diagonal.  Materials: Colored LEDs, analog electronic circuit, plastic screen, wooden case.

Size: 30” x 48”

The colors at each end of the large color field change in different color cycles, creating slow undulations like ocean waves.

The challenge with ‘Drift’ was to create a long smooth color gradient with LED illumination controlled by an analog circuit.

The borders at the top and bottom are the same color, but often appear different due to simultaneous contrast.

"Let there be...," and then there was...Man was born from the Earth. Here I meditate on my own birth from the clay I was molded from to this living being caught between clarity and the blindness or veil that's been cast over our eyes once we lose our innocence.
