Daniel's profile
After moving to Highlandtown in 1996 Daniel Schiavone quickly became involved in neighborhood revitalization efforts which led to developing the Patterson Theater as a home for the Creative Alliance. After leaving the Creative Alliance, he continued to contribute to the community creating highly visible events including the Highlandtown Wine Festival and the Highlandtown Basement Bar Tour. He served on the Enoch Pratt Anchor Library Steering Committee and led efforts to develop the Highlandtown’s Arts and Entertainment District.
Schiavone's artistic endeavors span both music and visual art. He is Music Director at Our Lady of Pompei Church and he creates paintings, drawings, prints, and art books. Schiavone’s paintings and drawings investigate imaginative imagery. Through the expressive use of paint, charcoal, and other mediums he presents a complex mosaic of images. Urgency, immediacy, strong gesture, and sensuality are important elements that render his mysterious narratives. In 1995 he bound a book in leather for Pope John Paul II, commissioned by Catholic Relief Services. He exhibits regularly and, with Elizabeth, runs Schiavone Fine Art exhibiting contemporary art.
Schiavone has taught college courses and occasional lectures on art. At the Maryland Institute, College of Art he served as Special Projects Coordinator where he managed traveling arrangements for Eyewinkers, Tumbleturds and Candlebugs: The Art of Elizabeth Scott. Schiavone has written about art and culture and has been published in the New Art Examiner, The Urbanite and other periodicals.
In 1986 he created the first web-based state arts council database of artists for the Maryland State Arts Council. His IT experience includes two successful startups. He is currently CEO of Snake Hill Web Agency, a software development company that specializes in building sophisticated web sites with Drupal.
