About Linda

Baltimore County

Linda Popp creates narrative found object assemblage sculptures. She uses artifacts and symbolic objects to convey stories about relationships with family, place, love, faith, nature, self, time, and other themes. During the process, she goes beyond her personal stories and the narrative becomes universal as she feels our stories are all connected. Some objects/symbols are obvious; others may be interpreted by viewers differently as they bring their own experiences to the work. Linda enjoys… more

Relationship with Time

As I am aging, I am very aware of "Enjoying The Passing Of Time." In this series I am reflecting on past experiences enjoyed and new adventures that I am looking forward to. I think both activities are very important for our mental and emotional health. Sadly, seniors are often invisible in our society, but I am trying to say, "don't move so fast." We still have dreams to fulfill. If we have made it this far, we are pretty resilient and have first-hand knowledge to share. We are also appreciative of each day and don't take our time on this earth for granted. I am not going to waste my time on the "small stuff," and will cherish my good fortune. In the "Blue Zones" where people live the longest, one of the characteristics that they have in common is a sense of purpose. I am extremely grateful for the sense of purpose my art-making gives me.....and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon!

A Jumble Of Small Things Priceless And Worthless

A Jumble Of Small Things Priceless And Worthless - 46 x 32 x 5, narrative found object assemblage wall-relief sculpture that I consider my self-portrait over time. The title is an essay by Zora Neale Hurston that resonates with me. She states that we are each a jumble of things. We all put meaning into our treasured momentos. She also thinks that we could all dump our things together, scoop out a new jumble, and still be happy. We can connect with the new things in different ways. This is my hope for my work.......something from my story will cause you to reflect on your own narrative and bring you understanding. Younger viewers can also learn from these objects as they might not know what they are. Maybe an object will remind you of your grandmother and you will give her a call or think of her memory sweetly.

The "stilts" are from a world in "Einstein's Dreams" where people felt they could live their longest, best life the further they were from the center of the earth. I am living my best life.

Relationship with Dreams/Opportunities

We now have many women in Congress, a female Vice-President, astronauts, doctors, and football coaches. Even Barbie has many different careers! The glass ceiling is definitely cracking, which I find very exciting. Opportunities have changed so much just even in my life-time! I wonder how these new opportunities have changed the dreams of young girls. I love how little girls now can portray their "future self" in their drawings. They imagine that they can become anything! I want to celebrate that in my work, but I also want to remind us that this was not always the case. My mother, aunts, grandmother and women of that time were focused on domestic issues and taking care of the home.  Opportunities were so different then for all young people, especially for women. Our roles were clearly defined by gender. I am so grateful to the men and women who did the work to pave the way for us all to dream bigger and better for ourselves and the world.

Relationship with Love (All People)

"We Should Believe In  Each Others' Dreams".....I guess, being a teacher, I always have. Actually, I often believed students could go beyond their own dreams. I am very saddened by the lack of empathy and compassion that I see in the world today. I am frustrated by the disrespect and lack of care for all creatures and our natural environment...."There Is So Much That Needs To Be Tended." I watch the news and then I go to my studio to work out my sorrow and frustration. Seeing reports of children escaping violence to be put in cages in our country breaks my heart. Being in schools, I know many children are not safe and loved at home. "They Need A Sheltered Nest" was made in response to these and other news reports. Notice their nest is on stilts to live their longest, best life as in "Einstien's Dreams." Just recently I saw a report in the news about the rise in teen suicides and in the report family and friends were so bewildered saying they had no clue their teen was struggling.  We need to check in on each other and communicate better. "You Are Not Alone"
As you can see, I am a positive person and desperately hang on to the belief that we have the power to make this world a better place. My hope is that my visual response to current events might inspire others to explore their own personal feelings and make a positive action.

  • We Should Believe In Each Others' Dreams
We Should Believe In Each Others' Dreams

We Should Believe In Each Others' Dreams - 15 x 15 x 3 - narrative found object assemblage wall- relief sculpture featuring objects from many different cultures all working together in an interesting, unified composition......my hope for our country.  A friend gave me the little slippers as a present and immediately I knew I could start on this piece that I had been thinking about for quite a while. The title is a lyric in a hymn, which gave me my intention. This peculiar wooden box had the small compartments.....I believe it was hand-made, but I don't know the purpose. I had a multicultural collection of objects, some given to me by former students, and started to arrange them within the space. I felt it was important to include the figures laying face down next to the Statue Of Liberty as this was during the time of the BLM protests. We all have dreams for ourselves, our families, our communities, and if we support each other, we can make those dreams come true. (2020)

Relationship with Love (Nature)

This series was prompted by the COVID shut down. The gym was closed, so my exercise became running/jogging/walking outdoors. I became aware of all of the beauty that surrounds me every day in nature in a way that I never had before. We all went through the changes of seasons as time went on and I was amazed by the variety of colors, forms, and textures of the changing environment. Being the constant collector, I began picking up all sorts of natural objects. As my appreciation grew, and my collection grew, I was inspired to share my new discoveries....my discoveries about nature and about myself in the process. Ideally, my work will cause the viewer to reflect on their own relationship with nature.....go outside....take a breath....take a walk....enjoy....and protect our precious environment.

See The Beauty When There's Nothing There - 20 x 8 x 2 narrative found object assemblage wall-relief sculpture (companion to "Hear The Song Within The Silence") focusing on opening yourself to truly appreciating nature. Slowing down and enjoying the natural beauty that's right around us. I had just retired and moved to the country.  I started to gather natural objects like feathers, pine cones, acorns, bees, rocks, and maple seeds. But some are still too busy, represented by the people figures behind the nails. I was one of those people for too long. (2017)

Relationship with Love (True)

"I Want A Sunday Kind Of Love" is an old song by Etta James. I often get my working titles from song lyrics. I listen to music in my studio, and different lyrics speak to me and I jot them down. I think it's an idea that I'd like to explore further and I don't want it to get lost. When that working title connects with an object (in this case, the kissing bride figure), it gives me my intention to start a new piece. I then add it to my "queue" and begin gathering symbolic/metaphorical objects and artifacts to illustrate the narrative. I have learned to allow time for this part of the process. It's like visual brainstorming. No judging, just gathering from my collections of "priceless and worthless" things. After my intention and objects have "marinated" together for awhile, I am ready to move it to the front burner. Then the "hard fun" begins and I start arranging, adding, eliminating. and allowing the story to be told. I enjoy the challenge of getting these objects to work together physically and in terms of composition. I have learned not to rush this part of the process too, and to still stay open to new ideas and objects along the way. Often a friend will drop off a bag of "worthless" things and in it is exactly what I needed to complete a work. I think people enjoy seeing their cast-offs get a new life. I know I do.

This series is about finding that one love to go through life with. It has been a winding journey and I have documented different stories along the way. I'm like the Taylor Swift of visual art. My art process has helped me to process my feelings.

Relationship with Love (Family)

This is where my narrative found object assemblage sculpture work began.  I was teaching Art II in high school and my students were working intently on amazing portraits and then self-portraits. Their products were outstanding, but I felt their process was getting stale. In an effort to shake it up I introduced the problem: "Explore the symbolism of found objects in order to create a portrait of a person you have had a long-term relationship with." As the teacher, I needed to make a prototype, so my piece was "Anne's Angel".....a portrait of my mother. I was immediately hooked on the process. I could convey so much and reflect on so many characteristics, qualities, and experiences in one piece. For me, these family portraits became shrines to honor these people that meant so much to me. After doing several more portraits, I began to explore other ideas and themes about family. This series spans many years.  By the way, my students loved the work too. When I see them now, many, many years later, they tell me they still have their sculptures proudly displayed.

I used objects from different ages to tell the story, from a diaper pin to an engagement ring. The fan was given to me by a former student and was her childhood toy. My daughter had one very similar. So many wonderful stories.....many memories that we might share. Barrettes, Barbie shoes, marbles, worry dolls, skate key, car key, jump rope, graduation tassel, jacks, knitting doll, rounded point scissors, lipstick, etc. (2023)

Relationship with Place

This series began while I was listening to James Taylor, "Bartender Blues."  The lyric "I need four walls around me to hold my life" resonated with me and I wanted to explore it further. I began to reflect on the different places that I have called home or have felt like "home" to me throughout my life. It caused me to think about the joys and sorrows and how my experiences in each place have shaped me. "501" was my childhood home featuring a caboose, since it was next to the rairoad tracks. To this day I attribute my amazing sleeping ability to learning to sleep through all of the train noise. "#11" housed many joys but also many struggles, so I picked up my sticks and moved on. In "433" I feel I grew to my true self. The stilts are inspired by "Einstein"s Dream" where in one of his worlds people felt they lived their longest, best life the farther they were from the center of the earth. I have shared a few of my stories here, but I like to allow the viewer to reflect on their own narrative when viewing my work. My jumble of objects may remind them of their own experiences and very different stories. We are each a "jumble of small things priceless and worthless" and I hope we can treasure our shared experiences with these objects.

I had painted the dining room chairs with crazy patterns topped with a branch and a Sawdy Jester carved bird (visionary artist). I did the kitchen backsplash in broken plates from family and friends. Those memories are represented here. The narrative is elaborated with a fan, cookie cutter, noise makers, croquet post, furniture detail, branches, Mickey Mouse Pez dispenser, bird on spring, cast metal girl figure, dog figure, etc. (2019)

Relationship with Female Image/Beauty

Women are bombarded with images of how we should look, what we should wear, the products we should use. Our face, our hair, our bodies are judged by some unrealistic standard. No wonder so many young girls struggle with body image. At the other end of the spectrum, we older women often feel we are invisible. I do feel that some women are now standing up to this barrage and reminding us that we are each beautiful in our own way. I am trying to do my part in this effort. I started collecting vintage compacts and beauty products and was motivated to create a series of work reminding us that we are so much more than our reflection in the mirror. All women, all sizes, shapes, colors, and ages should feel beautiful about themselves. Whether you are a cowgirl or a ballerina "Embrace Yourself As You Are."

Works on Paper

I had been considering trying to work flat for quite a while. Then a call for entry to the Maryland Federation of Art's "Art On Paper Exhibit" got me actually working. Sometimes the criteria for an exhibit might be the motivating push that I need. So, I began with the shallow shadow boxes, some old photographs from the family photo-bin, some of my old lithographs and etchings, and the Art Nouveau switch plate frames (used to protect the wall-paper) that had been sitting around the studio for quite a while too. Though I couldn't stay with only paper, I am happy to report that the pieces did get accepted in the show.

The small 7 x 5 collages began when I discovered my mother's photo album from 1940....the year she graduated from high school. Oh my, this was such a wonderful experience. I found myself responding to this woman that I knew, but as this young woman enjoying her late teen years, getting ready to leave home, preparing to start her adult life. What were her hopes and dreams at that time? What words of encouragement could I offer her, knowing her future. I was seeing the entire family as much younger versions of the people I love. The process made me think of myself, and all young women as we graduate and begin new chapters of our lives. I did a suite of twelve collages.... a goal for an exhibit at Hamilton Art Gallery. I'm sure I will continue this new year as I continue to learn so much in the process.

Community/Connection

I still love teaching, and now I get to teach about my own creative process, my narrative found object assemblage sculpture techniques and tips, challenges, risks, and the art of this art form. I love hands-on workshops where the participants get to experience the process themselves and I get to facilitate their exploration. I love teaching teachers who can then take the information back to their classrooms and develop lessons to engage their students in the assemblage process.....ripples in the pond. I love Artist Talks where I can help the audience appreciate the narrative found object assemblage process as an art form. It doesn't matter if it is in-person or via zoom.....it's building an artistic community.  I've learned that I love making connections with others through my artworks and my teaching.

  • Working With Collections

In this video I am speaking to elementary and middle school students about my process of working with the objects that I have collected. This was created during the Covid lock-down for distance learning activities for Baltimore County Public Schools. The BCPS Visual Arts Office wanted to be able to continue with the curriculum, but had to account for students being able to work from home.  By working with their own collections, the activity would be personalized and meaningful to the students. Everyone is back in the buildings now, but I have heard from teachers that they are still using my video as a resource in the classroom. I truly love helping students experience the joy of creating stories with found objects.

  • Telling Stories

After my first video about working with collections a high school teacher asked if I could continue and discuss how I create a narrative using found objects. Telling stories in art is part of the high school visual arts curriculum. It was a natural progression for me to just continue the discussion as I continued working on the piece. I felt it was one of those "happy accidents" that I could illustrate my thinking and the progress in my creative process when the videos would be shown together. I hope my videos can inspire students to tell their authentic and meaningful stories.

It was truly an honor to be interviewed by Dr. Karen Carroll during a studio visit. We have known each other for a long time through our art teaching. She was able to recognize the continuity between my art making and my teaching. She asked a number of questions that allowed me to share a bit about my journey and information about my creative process. It was an honor.

National Art Education Association Conference Presentation, 4/14/2023

Telling Authentic Stories With Stuff....In The Classroom And The Studio, NAEA Conference presentation, 4/14/2023. The purpose of this presentation was to share strategies, tips, and techniques for students to create found object assemblage sculptures in order to communicate personal narratives. Teachers would feel comfortable and confident in their ability to facilitate personal story-telling working with all kinds of found materials, supplies, and tools. I shared many idea-generating strategies, management techniques, safety considerations, student work and artist statements, and work from my personal studio practice. I gave the teachers the power point as a resource for their classroom.

Creating personal narratives using found objects is an extremely relevant topic for Secondary Instruction. Personal choice and personal voice are embedded in the process. This is a unique process that allows students to experiment with forms, structures, materials, concepts, media and art-making approaches. Each found object involves creative problem solving for assemblage and students learn from trial and error. Through experimentation, practice, and persistence, students demonstrate the acquisition of skills and knowledge in this unique art form. Students explore the symbolism in found objects in order to express their ideas. This process also impacts their experiences with interpretation and response to the non-representational art of others. Students thrive on the personal responsibility and independence that this activity demands. They discover that creativity and innovative thinking are essential life skills that can be developed. National Standards for Creating, Responding, Presenting, and Connecting are addressed within this unit.

Belmont University, Tennessee Art Academy workshop for teachers, Nashville, 7/11/2023

I had been invited to have a solo exhibit at Belmont University, Nashville as part of the Tennessee Art Academy ( professional development for arts teachers). I was also asked to offer an Artist Talk for teachers and faculty, an Artist Talk for students who had their work in a state-wide awards exhibit, and present a hands-on workshop for teachers. Since the time was relatively brief, and supplies limited for the workshop, I presented "Elaborating The Narrative Of A Photograph Using Collage, Assemblage, Sculpture Techniques." I had examples of each in my exhibit that they had seen the evening before the workshop. I also presented a power point to share tips, techniques, and my creative process. The teachers worked with collage and most were able to get a great start on a personal, meaningful collage/assemblage. Many said they couldn't wait to try this in their classrooms. I gave them the powerpoint to use as a resource.

Towson University, workshop with art education students, 7/5/2023, student exhibit

I had been invited to show my work in a group exhibit, "Again" at Towson University. While the exhibit was on display, I taught a workshop to art education students. The problem I gave them was to explore the symbolism of found objects in order to create a sculpture about a meaningful event or person in their life. I used a power point to present tips, techniques, concepts, and my creative process. In the classroom I had several more sculptures and an in-progress sculpture as illustration. We also made a trip to the gallery for a visit to the exhibit. They were to complete their work to be included in an exhibit of their own at the end of the semester. The image is a student presenting her work at the exhibit. I gave my power point to the students to use as a resource in their future classrooms.

Zoom Artist Talk with Mountain Ridge Junior High art students, Highland, Utah, 12/18/23

Zoom Artist Talk with Mountain Ridge Junior High art students, Highland, Utah, 12/18/23. Their teacher, Cherri Pitcher, had attended my workshop at the NAEA Conference in April. She reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in presenting to her class. Of course, I was thrilled. So, as part of the motivation for them to begin a sculpture unit, we met. They were in their classroom in Utah, and I was in my studio in Maryland. I gave them a tour since they said they had never been to an artist's studio before. Then, using the artworks that were there as illustration, I talked about my creative process, tips, and techniques. They asked questions throughout the talk. They were very interested and engaged as they were to begin their own sculptures. I hope to see their exhibit shortly.

Artist Talk, Catonsville High School, Sculpture students, 12/18/2023

These students are in a 3D Art class at Catonsville High School. Their teacher, Windy Spiridigliozi contacted me about speaking with her class. She had used me as a resource for this class, and thought they would be excited to have the opportunity to see my work in person and discuss our work together. Knowing that the students had already created a small nature sculpture using a mint tin and a larger self-portrait assemblage sculpture, I revised my presentation. I did share my personal goals, techniques and tips for future work. We discussed the importance of taking the teacher's assignments and making meaningful, personal responses to the problem. I had a power point and shared several sculptures and in-progress pieces. Their work was on display and we had a critique. As they shared their work with me, I was so interested in their approaches to the problem. Each piece was very unique and thoughtfully created. I learned from them as they learned from me.....which is what I love about teaching.
