    A nod to Baltimore's art icons

    This is a screen door commissioned by a resident of the Hollins Market neighborhood. She wanted a celebration of Baltimore's art history and iconic buildings in the neighborhood. Edgar Allen Poe, Billie Holliday, Cab Callaway and John Waters grace the bottom of the screen. The B and O Museum Roundhouse ( railroading a Baltimore first) and the Hollins Public Market Headhouse.

    The family wanted a celebration of Mt Vernon and George Washington, Baltimore style. The screen graces their front room in a historic home in the Union Square neighborhood.

I was born and raised in Baltimore City. I attended Catholic Schools through College where I earned a degree in Sociology with a minor in Theology. After college, I entered the world of community development in Baltimore working for several non-profit organizations and City government. I had the pleasure of working in just about every neighborhood in the City over a fifty year time span before retiring at the age of 70. Baltimore's Folk Art - The Painted Screen

Baltimore in 2013 started a practical art movement that involved painting screens in windows and doors to create privacy without hindering air flow. There were many painted screen artists over the years. I am working with others to try to preserve this unique art form. This project is a sample of screens that I have painted and that now grace the fronts of folks homes. I hope you enjoy them.
