Michael's profile

I was born and raised in Baltimore City. I attended Catholic Schools through College where I earned a degree in Sociology with a minor in Theology. After college, I entered the world of community development in Baltimore working for several non-profit organizations and City government. I had the pleasure of working in just about every neighborhood in the City over a fifty year time span before retiring at the age of 70. Working on the streets of Baltimore gave me a profound sense of the beauty of the City and warmth of its residents. In 2006, I began to start to work in two dimensional arts, primarily charcoal and pen and ink. By 2012 I was becoming somewhat proficient and widened my interest by undertaking to contribute to Baltimore's folk art, The Painted Screen. I have become a Master Painter after serving as an apprentice to John Iampieri. I hold workshops at different venues (Creative Alliance, Manor Mill, Maryland Center for History and Culture, The Visionary Arts Museum, Senior Centers, libraries, and different schools. I am a member of the Hamilton Art Collective and show my work at the Hamilton Art Gallery. I was affiliated with the Off Track Art Gallery in Westminster. My commissioned screens are a collaborative effort between buyer and artist. The beauty of the painted screen is not only its practical usage of providing privacy while allowing air flow but but also it is private art on public display.
