  • killing the shark with the knife my grandpa gave me
killing the shark with the knife my grandpa gave me

I was given a rusty ol' knife by my paternal grandfather, a Greek who was born into a prominent, well-to-do family in San Antonio, Texas (whose parents immigrated to the US in the early 1900s). My grandpa was the black sheep of his family, but I loved how real and crass he was. He walked around with an unfiltered, unlit Camel cigarette hanging off the side of his lips, and he spoke with a deep, raspy voice. Grandpa Daniel loved doing unusual things with me, like the time he took me deep-sea fishing off the Gulf of Mexico (mistakenly renamed the "Gulf of America") and gave me a knife to "kill my first shark with," or when he drove me across the border from Texas into Mexico to buy me a pair of blue jeans and cowboy boots. He stopped to ask a Mexican man for directions, saying that we were "wetbacks from the other side." That was my grandpa, always saying something inappropriate. The knife that he gave me was later confiscated at my elementary school. My boyfriend was visiting my house one day when I showed him the knife. Excitedly, he said he had something at home that could remove the rust and make it shine. He took the knife and unbeknownst to me, brought it to school where a teacher caught him showing off to friends. He quickly said, "That's Stelli's knife!" Of course, the teachers didn't believe that I wasn't the one who broght it to school. All they heard was that it was my knife. I was suspended and the bastards kept the knife.

  • Silence!, Please?
    "Silence!, Please?"

Thanks to the "Me-too" movement, we are well aware of how common sexual abuse is. What's discussed far less often is what happens to victims who choose to remain silent to protect those who caused the abuse to begin with. This is especially prevalent when the abuse occurs within a family system. What happens when love is weaponized by an abuser, and the victim participates in keeping the abuse hidden? What is the effect (mentally, physically, spiritually) on a person who perpetuates a lie by remaining silent?

  • bathtime en la pila with Mamita in Managua
bathtime "en la pila" with Mamita in Managua

My mother chose to give birth to me in her home city and country, Managua, Nicaragua, on November 1, 1972, because it was important to her that I be "Nicaraguan." We returned to the US (where she was going to school) when I was 52 days old. My father was American. I visited Managua regularly to spend time with my grandparents and two aunts. My grandmother, "Mamita," was a fierce and charismatic matriarch who was like a second mother. The showers in her house only had cold water, so Mamita used to add boiling water to the pila (wash basin) where she'd bathe me outside on her back patio. The patio was where the chickens, pigs, and various other animals roamed until Mamita slaughtered them for food. Mamita, who is 101 years old, is alive and well, and lives in Managua.

  • Super Girl's bush on fire
    Super Girl's bush on fire

I used to wear a "Super Girl" t-shirt, like the one I drew in this picture, when I was a kid. I loved that t-shirt and would wear one today if I could find one as cool as the one I had. I do not have tattoos because my paternal grandmother once cringed and stated how much she couldn't stand them (she is alive and well, lives in Florida and is 96 years old). I secretly like tattoos, especially on women. This drawing depicts a grown-up Super Girl with her bush on fire, indicating a woman in control of her body and sexuality. The hands behind her back, however, reflects her tentativeness and conern that others may not be able to handle her strength and power.

About STELLI

Stelli Munnis is a self-taught artist who uses the creative process as a doorway to understanding herself and the world. Everything that she creates, whether it be a drawing, a painting, a poem, or a zine, she does so with a desire to explore the deeper aspects of what it means to be a human being.

Much of Stelli’s work is autobiographical, reflecting her Nicaraguan/Greek/Scottish heritage and unique upbringing. Common themes in her art include identity, culture, dreams,… more

Dimensions of Self

Dimensions of Self is a creative project that includes poetry and writing, drawings and paintings, handmade books and zines, and a forthcoming multi-media exhibition. I started working on this project several years ago to help me understand and honor my life, specifically after having experienced sexual trauma in my early 20s. I was betrayed and wounded by two individuals, one of whom was my intimate partner, and the other, someone I trusted and was very close to. After the abuse, I became angry, depressed, and full of resentment. I was masterful at hiding my feelings from others and suffering in silence. My instinct was to protect those involved because I loved them and didn't want their lives to be ruined, even though, in a sense, mine was.

One way I coped was to focus on my own healing process, which included getting a PhD in transpersonal psychology. I was especially interested in learning about family systems and the role that power plays in relationships. After 30+ years of study and personal growth, I have come to believe that healing is not a place where we arrive, and then we are done. Rather, it is a life-long journey where we experience moments of stillness, and moments of peace, and if we are lucky, those moments extend into greater periods of time. But, for many of us, we continue to experience pain (emotional and/or physical) and suffering, even after doing all the things we were told to do, like meditation and prayer and all the latest therapeutic and healing modalities.

Even so, the only way forward is through, and the more that we can sit in a place of truth, and the more that we can accept who-what-and-where we are, the more we can grow in awareness, which I believe is the point, or at least part of it. For me, the creative process is an essential part of my journey. When I write, or draw, or do something creative, I feel a shift inside my being, and for a time, I feel better. My purpose in producing Dimensions of Self is to have a better understanding of myself, my family, and my life, and my hope is that it also inspires others to explore these themes for themselves.

  • My Heritage
    My Heritage

My Heritage is a hardcover, 100-page handsewn book with Coptic binding, that includes photographs, official documents, and stories about my family and ancestors. This includes "the Greeks" from my father's paternal side, "the Scots" (+Irish, German, Dutch) from my father's maternal side, and "the Nicaraguans" from my mother's side.

  • My Life Story
    My Life Story

My Life is a handmade, hardcover book (120 pages, 8.5"x11") with Coptic binding, that includes stories and photographs about my life. I cover the period from my birth in Managua, Nicaragua, to growing up in New Orleans, Louisiana (as well as other places like Texas, Florida, and California) to my current life in Baltimore. In the book, I write everything I can remember to help me honor my life, including my trauma and subsequent search for meaning.

  • Why am I Greek, Irish, German, Dutch, Scottish, Nicaraguan?
Why am I Greek, Irish, German, Dutch, Scottish, Nicaraguan?

Why am I Greek, Irish, German, Dutch, Scottish, Nicaraguan? is a 12-page accordion book (22"x17") with hand-sewn inserts that contains channeled messages about my heritage and why I was born into those specific cultural paradigms.

    From the book:

What’s important for me to know about my Greek heritage. What has been passed down to me from my ancestors? What karma am I clearing from that part of my heritage?

You feel the weight of that heritage, and it is deeply engrained in you in many ways. There is the sense of the Oracle. The experience of providing guidance through that Oracle. It is a part of your history and a part of you over time that has helped lead you to Jeffrey [my husband who channels], and the purity of his channel. This is in part because the burden of the imperfect channel, the selfish use of that channel by rulers and kings is a difficult karma.

It is in some cases an abuse of Divine power. In Greece, the philosophers, the scholars, all of these people have contributed so much to the world, yet so much of it has been applied in a false manner or misapplied or attributed to the wrong use or intention. So, this very rich tradition of spirit and heart in Western Civilization has been corrupted in many ways. And so, the clearing of this corruption is part of your collective experience, and the need to overcome any residue within the being. There is in the Greek and Roman culture, the idealization of beauty and the objectification, which is a karmic pattern that you have had to deal with in this lifetime.

There is also the misuse of resources and attribute of living off the work of those who have been oppressed. The idea of greatness or of the conquering, God-like hero has to be reconciled and integrated in that tradition. So, there is much. And we don’t say this to mean that for those with this Greek heritage that they’re unique or different than others. Every human being has similar patterns, similar experiences, similar attachments and expectations that must be overcome. For you in this life, the dominant way of connecting and experiencing that part of your heritage is through the energetic feeling and sense of the relatives you have had on the Greek side of your family: the pride, the arrogance, the orientation toward the material. These are big things to overcome.

"Today I Feel . . ." Emotions Card Deck

During the Covid-19 pandemic, I drew an image to represent whatever emotion I happened to be feeling each day. After several people mentioned that they'd like to have copies of the images, I created a 52-deck of cards, which I called, "Today I Feel . . ." The cards have been used by teachers, couples, and individuals to open up new avenues of communication, and they've been especially useful for those with ADHD, autism, neurodiversity, and high sensitivity (HSPs) to aid in the exploration, expression, and processing of feelings.

  • Today I Feel . . . Emotions Card Deck

Eyes to See: US Volunteers in Nicaragua

"Eyes to See" is a project created by artists Stelli Munnis and Veronica Winters, where they share what it's like for volunteers from the US to travel to Nicaragua to build a classroom in the rural part of the country. Volunteers go with the idea that they are there to help "those poor people," yet each of them returns home having received more than they gave. The volunteers were deeply moved and touched by the hearts and spirits of the Nicaraguan children and people.

The "Eyes to See" project includes a book of 100 color photographs taken by Stelli and Veronica, a video shot and edited by Veronica, and a multi-media exhibit that gave visitors a sense of what the volunteers experienced (internally and externally) on their journey to Nicaragua and back.

Eyes to See: U.S. Volunteers in Nicaragua includes over 150 pages of full-color photographs and stories about the experiences of 23 volunteers from the United States who travel to Nicaragua to help build a school with the nonprofit organization, Seeds of Learning. The book portrays everyday life in rural Nicaragua and the experience of those exposed to her lovely people and land.

Visitors to the "Eyes to See" exhibition experienced entering and sitting inside a "home" made from cardboard, to mimic homes in Nicaragua that poor people make out of scrap metals and other found objects. Across the back wall of the cardboard house, images of actual homes and living circumstances were projected to give visitors a sense of what life was like for those people.

Devious Doings: Max & Gumbo Search for the Wind

My grandmother Iris, who is 96 years old and an award-winning poet, and I created this children's paperback. Devious Doings is a story for children of all ages about Max, a little boy from New Orleans, and a bird who appeared while Max was eating his grandmother's gumbo. Max and the little bird become inseparable, and somehow, they can communicate with each other. Max lovingly names the bird "Gumbo," and together, they explore the mystery of the wind: what it is, where it comes from, how it hides, and the enormous power it seems to yield over all things, near and far.

Earth Manual

The Earth Manual is a compilation of 7 zines created by Stelli Munnis that contain everything (she believes) you need to know about how to (effectively) live on earth. The zines cover topics like understanding one's purpose, how to nuture one's relationship with the Divine, how to interpret dreams, understanding subpersonalities, understanding our uniqueness and giftedness, dealing with the tough things that "haunt" us, and more.

Street Photography

I love street photography. When I walk around with my camera, I try to strike a balance between being inconspicuous, so as to not make people feel self-conscious, and being open about the fact that I’m taking pictures. I love to capture moments when people are deep in thought or concentration. I imagine what the person might be thinking or feeling. I imagine what life might be like for them. I’m especially drawn to those whose lives and contexts are different than my own. I wonder what it’s like to live their life. When people notice that their picture is about to be taken, they sometimes develop a serious or shy expression, but other times, they do something goofy and fun. My favorite photographs are those moments when time seems to stop and there is a recognition between two souls seeing one another for the first, and possible the last time.

telegrams from those in the flesh

I love Little Free Libraries where you sometimes find newly-released, bestsellers, but my favorites discoveries are unusual books, like the out-of-print, Laws of Nature, by Andrew J. King, that inspired this zine. Laws of Nature, originally published in 1911, was based on the revelations of Andrew’s wife, Maria M. King, a medium in the 19th century. As I flipped through the pages, I was fascinated by the use of language. Phrases like, “the ordinary middle class in enlightened nations,” “angels of all Spirit-spheres,” “the heavens are shut against the fall of rain,” and “mental magnetism within the sphere of the mother” called out to me, and I became inspired to create poetry and drawings based on the text. The result is a zine, telegrams from those in the flesh, that I created by cutting and pasting phrases from the original text, then reordering the snippets to create poems with themes that include the cosmos, man’s wicked nature, life and death, the realm of spirit, motherhood, and the Divine feminine.
