Flotsam & Jetsom
This quilt is part of a series I created for a gallery exhibit of miniature work. It features various small objects - items found in a junk drawer, perhaps - stitched to the surface under a snippet of vinyl. The viewer is invited to reflect on the collection of objects and form their own narrative of connections and meaning.

Disorder
Disorder is part of my ongoing series examining mental health issues and our internal/public dialogue with these issues. It is often difficult for those who do not suffer from mental health concerns to understand the challenges and effect of such illnesses. Through this series, I hope to provide a metaphorical frame of reference of my own lived experience for the viewer.

El Perdedor
El Perdedor is part of my on-going series on the lived experience of mental illness. Each piece offers symbolic and literal elements aimed at explaining – or helping viewers identify with – the emotions, sensations, and self-talk of mental illness. The metaphorical elements include the obvious: masks, anonymity, “differentness,” but also the deeply personal element: the mask is made from one of my own pieces of work. I leave the words up to the viewer to decipher.

Trivia Night at Disney's Tavern
I was invited to participate in a show which was part of the 250th anniversary celebration of the founding of Ellicott City, Maryland. The show, a collaboration between Howard County Arts and the Howard County Historical Society, asked artists to create work inspired by an object in the Historical Society's collection.
My object was an aide memoire; the 19th century version of the pocket notepad. Each block in the album quilt relates to people, history, events, and characteristics of Ellicott City. My piece won the Historical Society's award.

About Stephanie

Since learning how to thread a needle at age 6, I’ve been entranced with the ability of textiles to be transformed and turned into something greater than their humble beginnings.
I sew because I love the process and ritual of stitching. I began quilting because that creative ritual results in a useful object. However it is an object that provides an blank canvas for creative ideas: color, whimsy, eye-catching designs, thought-provoking images, and important messages. I also love… more
2024 Ardis James QSOS Scholar Project with the Quilt Alliance
From the Quilt Alliance website:
The Quilt Alliance established the Ardis James QSOS Scholars Program in 2013 with the support of the Robert and Ardis James Foundation to support research that draws on the rich resource of over 1,200 Quilters’ S.O.S. – Save Our Stories (QSOS) interviews collected by the Alliance since 1999. Scholars use the QSOS archive to produce original research to disseminate as essays, exhibitions, curricular materials, and interactive content.
QSOS interviewees share how quilting impacts their lives, including inspiration found in unlikely places, comfort during times of grief, and joyful artistic collaboration among friends. Our interview archive is a valuable resource for anyone interested in quilts and quiltmakers, as well as craft, folk art, and the process of making things. It’s our hope that the Ardis James QSOS Scholars Program will enable scholars to dig into the archive and investigate those stories, making connections among interviews, finding common themes, placing histories in context, and spotlighting incredible moments.

I Felt Like Making a Quilt
I was awarded the Ardis James Scholar opportunity as an artist, with my project being a mixed media "quilted" sculpture which utilized the Quilt Alliance's oral history database (Quilters Save Our Stories, or QSOS). A significant portion of my recent work centers on mental health and I was able to pull quotes and audio related to this subject. Numerous quilters expressed how quilting made a positive impact on issues related to mental health such as grief and trauma.
Topics in mental health
The post-COVID mental health crisis has increased discussion around this difficult topic but it remains a huge challenge for the global population. While I began exploring this subject long before the pandemic, present social conditions keep me going,
