Lucas's profile

Lucas Novaes is an interdisciplinary artist based in Baltimore whose practice investigates sound as a material—how it is shaped, stored, transmitted, and reactivated through objects, images, and spaces. Working across luthiery, painting, archival restoration, and public installation, Novaes approaches listening as both method and form.

He is the founder of Novaes & Sons, a father–son lutherie collective rooted in traditional acoustic guitar-making, where handcrafted instruments function as acoustic sculptures and systems of resonance.
His work combines fine art sensibilities with sound engineering, treating vibration, material choice, and structure as carriers of cultural memory. This inquiry extends into archival and curatorial projects, where processes of transfer, restoration, and contextual framing are approached as acts of care, interpretation, and dialogue with existing histories.

Novaes holds a BFA in Painting and Community Engagement from the Maryland Institute College of Art and studied design at the Delaware College of Art and Design. His work has been exhibited in the United States, Brazil, and New York, with works in collections in Chin, Tokyo, Dubai and London, he was featured at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2023. His practice remains grounded in lineage, place, and the ethics of listening.
