About Stephanie

I am a mixed media artist whose passion for painting evolved from a love of nature combined with digital photography, particularly post processing. My current work uses mixed media included handpainted papers, purchased art paper, textiles and heavily worked backgrounds. My love for color and complexity comes from my observations in my garden, from my experience working with the therapeutic process in my position as a retired sex/couples therapist. I love doing collage because of it'… more

Fragments of The Whole

In Fragments of the Whole, the artist explores the idea that we are more than the sum of our parts. This body of work, composed of intricate collages and mixed media abstractions, invites viewers to witness the transformative power of assembly. Each piece is born from fragments—scraps of paper, strokes of paint, and texture.  Some are then cut apart to develop the design.

Mixed media, collage using handmade and purchased art paper, acrylic paints and ink, and graphite on gallery wrapped canvas.

    20H x 20W

    2023

Layers of paper create forms that mimic the tension I experience when I enter my assigned seat on a plane wondering if the other person will be a good companion during an uncomfortable flight.  Will they take up more than their fair share of space?  Will they talk too much?  Will they be an interesting conversationalist?  The anxiety of an introvert.

Abstract Paintings

This collection of abstract paintings unfolds using bright colors to symbolize emotions that transcend language.

My process is to use many layers, creating a very textured ground and allowing what is underneath to show through in bits and pieces.  I often start with collage pieces that ghost through the final piece.  My hope is that these pieces bring a sense of therapeutic healing to the viewer to the same degree it brought me in the process of making it.

    14H x 11W

Abstract painting on gallery wrapped canvas.

    2024

This painting is a reflection of my mood after the election of 2024.  To me, art is a way of processing feelings and in this instance it was a passing moment of despair.  The canvas is dominated by shadowy shades of paynes gray, and oranges, along with gold leaf.  As we enter into any period of change whether personal, geopolitical, or that of the natural world, we feel the depth of fear but in reality, do not know what is to come.

  • Out of One Many
    Out of One Many

Out of One Many is a powerful and inspiring collage art piece that celebrates the spirit of immigration and unity. At its heart stands a woman, a figure of strength and grace, wearing a vibrant red top that symbolizes passion and resilience.

The words "Common Destiny" are collaged in the painting, suggesting a shared purpose that binds all people in our country together. Above her, an eagle soars with wings outstretched, its presence commanding and symbolic of freedom, protection, and vision. The eagle’s gaze seems to scan the horizon, a reminder of the vast possibilities and challenges that lie ahead.

The title, Out of One Many, reverses the familiar motto, E Pluribus Unum, to emphasize the richness of collective identity and the contributions of immigrants. The piece is a celebration and a call to honor the ideals of inclusion and the common destiny that shapes a nation built by many, for many.

  • Citizens Disunited
    Citizens Disunited

Citizens Disunited is a striking collage art piece that blends symbolism with powerful imagery to deliver a poignant message. At the center stands a woman, her figure both commanding and graceful. Her dress, crafted from intricate layers of red money—currency fragments and symbolic representations of wealth—flows dramatically, its sharp edges and crimson hue hinting at the corrosive influence of money in politics.

Her ochre blouse, textured and worn like parchment, carries the words of Thomas Paine. These words ripple like a banner in the wind, anchoring the piece in the ideals of liberty and justice. Her hair, a cascade of ink-black strands, whips wildly in the unseen gusts, embodying the turbulence of a system in flux.

She stands tall on a rugged mesa, the ground beneath her feet a testament to endurance and resilience. Above, the sky stretches vast and deep, a vibrant blue speckled with countless stars. Each star pulses faintly with light, symbolic of hope, unity, and the collective power of the people.
