  • Owl Gourd Vase
    Owl Gourd Vase

    This vase is crafted with a tall gourd vase. The front features a wood-burned owl, framed with a red framing. The background was then carved and painted to depict the sun setting on an ocean. Techniques used include  wood-burning, carving , painting, among others.

  • Gye Nyame Gourd Lamp
    Gye Nyame Gourd Lamp

    The Gye Nyame Gourd Lamp is a lamp made out of a large pear-shaped gourd, cut cleaned and drilled to ensure the design shines through, when powered. The design is the Gye Nyame adinkra symbol form Ghana. The symbol signifies the supremacy of God, in the Akan clan of Ghana.

About Trustina

Trustina Fafa Sabah is a theater and gourd artist originally from Ghana who lives in Baltimore, Maryland.  A year after her MFA in Theater Arts at Towson University, she discovered her love and talent for gourd art, and decided to pursue it. She founded Gourds By Fafa studio where she makes and sells her work online and at various events. She also teaches gourd art workshops.

Gourd Lamps

These are original gourd lamps that have been hand made by Trustina.  Each gourd is cut open on one or both ends, then cleaned out. Design is pencilled onto the gourd, then the holes are made to allow for the light to shine through. Most of the lamps Trustina makes are powered by LED

    "Swaddle" Gourd Lamp

    The Swaddle gourd lamp features swooping patterns that remind me of a swaddle. It projects energizing patterns when placed near a wall for your utmost visual enjoyment. The lamp is powered by an electric plug and is fitted with an LED bulb for lighting.

    Patterns Gourd Lamp

    The Patterns Gourd Lamp was made to celebrate geometric patterns. It projects overlapping circular shapes that repeat till they form other geometric shapes. The lap is powered by an electric cable and is fitted with an LED bulb for lighting.

    Fish Gourd Lamp

    When making a gourd lamp, the gourd is prepared, designed then drilled to allow the design to project when powered. The Fish Lamp Features several fish silhouettes depicting fish that are swimming all around it. It is accented with blue beads to signify the ocean, and red and brown beads for the eyes of the fish.

    The Gye Nyame lamp features the Gye Nyame Adinkra symbol, a powerful representation of the omnipotence of God in Ghanaian culture. The lamp's design not only serves as a stunning decor piece but also brings a meaningful cultural element to any space. This well sought after design/symbol is its own announcement, almost like it announces its own appellations.

     The Africa Lamp  is a made out of a tall gourd. It features the African map in front and circles in the back which casts projections on nearby walls. The design comes alive once its LED power is turned on.

    The blood at the cross gourd lamp is a tall lamp that projects angels wings when powered on. It is a part of the Psalm 91 collection, hence the angel wing theme. This lamp is powered by LED.

    The Jen gourd lamp is a lovely medium sized lamp with circular shapes.  It features soft blue  and red colored beads which gives it a happy and soft feel. It is powered by a single LED bulb.

    This is a gourd lamp whose design was carefully researched and executed. Captured within the design is a sense of minimalism, floral hints and practicality.

    Duafe Gourd lamp

    Inspired by the Duafe Adinkra symbol, the Duafe lamp seamlessly blends artistry with functionality. The design features a prominent ‘fro comb’ symbol on the front, which is the symbol for beauty in the Akan Adinikra Symbol world. The fro comb design is complemented by delicate hearts on the sides and back, celebrating both beauty and love. This lamp is powered by a single LED bulb.

    Ghana Map Gourd Vase 2023

    This is a tall gourd vase made in 2023. I used red gold green, colors of the Ghanaian flag and made demarcations  like one would see on a map. The vase is also embellished tastefully with rhinestones.

    Eye of The People Gourd Vase from The "Patina Strong" Collection

    The Eye of the people Gourd Vase is made with inspiration from Native American art and my Ghanaian background. I have always been fascinated by the Zuni bear visually. Knowing it is the symbol of health and protection for the Zuni Pueblo people draws me to it the more. I made this vase as an homage to the Native American people.

    The vase features the zuni bear symbol lodged in an eye and accented by the Kente cloth design from the Ashanti people of Ghana. Techniques I used include wood burning, carving, texturing and patina.

    Gourd Vases From The "Patina Strong" Collection 2021

    The Patina Strong" Collection included several gourd vases made by Trustina which shared the common theme of patina. Trustina achieved the looks by juxtaposing her signature bright colors with the weathered effect that patina gives. Techniques used include carving, painting and the use of patina to create a (beautiful) weathered effect on different parts of the gourds in the collection.

    Michael's vase is part of the Psalm 91 Collection, which is a collection dedicated to exploring angelic representation. It is a large gourd vase with carved white feathers and colorful background.

    This small 'Kente" gourd vase was made with inspiration from the Ghanaian kente cloth and Ghanaian traditional wedding dress. I hinted at a silhouette of a woman's dress with the frontal design.

    The covered gourd bowl in batik is a gourd with a lit cut out to specially fit the base. It is a part of a group of functional gourd vases I make for their beauty and functionality . The technique used here include dying and painting.

    Featuring rhinestones , a woodburned butterfly and a beautifully matted copper handle, this gourd piece was crafted with love for butterfly lovers. Techniques used include wood burning and dying.

    The Kingsley Bowl showcases an elegant design with faux gold stitching detail. The overall look of the bowl is enhanced by its beautifully crafted handle. It is about 6 inches tall and has a circumference of about 23 inches. The modern leather tooling feel adds a unique touch, making it a versatile piece for various settings.
