About Julia
Plagued by visions of low-poly animation, formative years in the Port Discovery Mystery House, East Asian grocery advertisements, and Googie design, Julia Cooke makes whatever the hell she wants and likes what she likes. She lives as a multimedia artist full time and has worked independently for three years as a painter, animator, and filmmaker. She is completely self-taught, taking little to no inspiration from media, giving her art a unique, authentic attribute. She founded and is a core… more
Animations
I started making animations solely because of constraints - I had no equipment to make a live action film, and I had nobody to work with. With animation, all you need is yourself and a computer. I started making these because it was fun, but people actually seemed to like them and I kept going. I never watched cartoons as a kid and grew up without a TV. The only inspiration I take is from everyday absurd encounters I have in real life.
Painting
I just like to paint. I don't take myself to seriously and I'm pretty pop. I really like the colors red, yellow, and blue. You can do a whole lot with them.

Live Action Filmmaking
God, I'd love to make more live-actions, but I've never found anyone who'd make them with me, and have always had a whole lot of trouble asking people for things. Luckily, the art collective I'm a part of (Sideworld) is gonna make a lot more films very soon. Glad I found some people who want to make things as much as I do.

Bone on the Nose
I created this film with my art collective Sideworld. The entire film from idea to edit was finished in a week. It was insane.
Logline: There's no doubt about it, Julia sure does love her special dog, Sparky. But how Sparky feels about Julia might just be a different story entirely...

Red Yellow Blue
I made this film when I lived in Rome. It was the first movie I ever made. I don't like it that much and I didn't know what I was doing, but some scenes look cool and I appreciate it for what it is.
Drawing
I made most of these because my friend moved to Mexico and gave me all his nice Copic brand markers. I go through phases of drawing, it's nice to switch up your primary art-making medium.

Photography
I've always had the urge to document things. I first bought a camera when I was living in Taipei when I was 21 and got stuck in Vietnam after my visa expired. I rented a cheap motorcycle and drove around the country. Everything was so beautiful that I bought a camera. After I went back to America, I began to take concert photography. I know how important the music scene is and have been extremely involved in music my entire life. I began taking these photos to document these bands, and edited them to turn them into art pieces.
