Our Roots Run Deep in the Chesapeake: Earl Conservation Center

This 75-foot interior, site-specific acrylic mural was hand-painted to bring the Chesapeake Conservancy’s logo to life as a bold statement for environmental stewardship. As you move down the stairs, the mural draws you below the Bay’s surface, inviting you to witness its diverse wildlife and layered ecosystems. Highlights of the Bay’s iconic landscapes and creatures celebrate the Chesapeake’s beauty, resilience, and living spirit—encouraging everyone who encounters it to connect with the Bay and care for it for years to come.

Our Roots Run Deep in the Chesapeake: Menhaden and Female Blue Crab (detail)

This detail highlights key forage species—Menhaden, a female Blue Crab, and glass shrimp—that form the foundation of the Bay’s food web. Their presence suggests the delicate balance of life beneath the surface, creating a subtle visual message about protecting these species for the health of the ecosystem. I created the 75-foot mural with the support of the Earl family, bringing the Chesapeake Conservancy’s logo to life while celebrating the Bay’s beauty, resilience, and interconnected wildlife.

  • Read, Learn, Grow Together: Broadneck Elementary School Library Legacy Mural Project
Read, Learn, Grow Together: Broadneck Elementary School Library Legacy Mural Project

This mural brought the entire Broadneck Elementary School community together to see a shared vision come to life. As a 2023 recipient of a Maryland State Arts Council Public Art Grant and a 2022 Arts in Education grant recipient, I designed, led, and created this two-year project—a vibrant, 65-foot, hand-painted, site-specific acrylic mural with the participation of 436 third- and fourth-grade students and high school alumni. Painted on multiple PVC panels to allow broad participation and ease of installation, the mural centers on a large open book whose flowing pages transform into the waves of the Chesapeake Bay.

The school mascot, the bee, appears retrieving nectar drips of honey, captaining a book-shaped boat, and surfing—student-proposed ideas that highlight creativity and ownership. Nautical flags on the boat create a playful seek-and-find element spelling out “Broadneck 2023,” while 584 student-painted flowers brighten the garden on the right side.

Celebrating literacy, learning, growth, and cross-generational collaboration, the mural transforms the library entrance into a welcoming gateway reflecting the school community’s shared stories and legacy.
