  • The Gospel at Colonus (Arena Players Inc.)

    The Gospel at Colonus is a musical adaptation of  Oedipus at Colonus, originally written by Sophocles. The story tells of Oedipus, the king, returning home to Colonus after being exiled. He is in search of a resting place as his last day is near. Bernard worked with over twenty local actors and singers to bring this story to life for the community of Baltimore. 

  • Twelfth Night (Chesapeake Shakespeare Company)

    In 2022, Bernard joined Ian Gallanar as assistant director at CSC for their production of Twelfth Night. Bernard has worked several times with Chesapeake Shakespeare Company over the years, including the recently staged production of August Wilson’s Fences

  • Marie Antoinette & the Magical Negroes (Single Carrot Theatre)

    This satirical melodrama combines the French and American revolutions along with modern civil rights movements to the story of the oppressed in America. Bernard, former Production Manager for Single Carrot Theatre, designed the set and props for the world of this new immersive Versailles. 

  • The Thanksgiving Play (Fells Point Corner Theater)
    The Thanksgiving Play (Fells Point Corner Theater)

    This dark comedy tells the story of appropriation and whose story should be told. Bernard designed the set for this production creating the school room for these young artists to tell their story. Also a proscenium and quilted curtain to portray the low budget traveling set of their pageant.

About Bernard

Bernard B. Johnson is a director and designer born and raised in Baltimore, MD. He began his career in theatre at the Baltimore School for the Arts, and later furthered his studies at The City College of New York. He has worked off-broadway as an assistant director and as a designer with such companies as Harlem Repertory Theatre, Dimo Kim Musical Factory, Basement Theatricals, and Theater for the New city.
