Flowers for the Rat

My series “Flowers for the Rat,” featuring the rat girl, explores the themes of moral decay and the consequences of selfish actions. Inspired by the 18th-century satirical series by William Hogarth,  'Marriage a la mode', which depicts the slow deterioration of a couple from their engagement to their eventual downfall, leaving a trail of devastated individuals in their wake.  I aim to convey the tragic consequences of disregarding the well-being of others in pursuit of one's own desires.

In my drawings, the rat girl represents a woman who has been shaped by her choices and circumstances, resulting in her transformation from a human to a rat. Through this metamorphosis, I aim to explore the effects of societal pressures and expectations on women, and the ways in which these forces can undermine one's sense of self and identity. The use of figure and expression allows me to highlight the psychological and emotional toll of losing oneself, and to illustrate the power of individual agency in shaping one's own destiny.

Invisible Cities

Inspired by the historic character of a brownstone in Reservoir Hill. Gentle, intricate, overgrown with charming anecdotal pieces of  those who live inside— artists, gardeners, bartenders, alchemists, car mechanics, musicians, luthiers— local fixtures in a tight-knit community.

These drawings treat the architecture as more than an environment strictly on display.  Seraphic angels and spirited glowing animals play, surrounding cornices and balustrades, between couches and plants on long wrap-around porches, the lines and perspective becoming unsure. The emotional history with time passing, this place and its inhabitants are deeply influential to these pieces.

Minotaur

This series covers  the artist's residency in 2019 as well as some pieces from 2020 heavily inspired by Picasso's drawings and etchings of the minotaur.  The minotaur, symbolic of half man/half beast, societal pressures upon man, devourer of women, became truly influential in theme to the later drawing series "Flowers for the rat."

This series of erotic drawings explores the delicate balance between sensuality and tension in human relationships. At the root of the concept of sex is an experience we all hold close within ourselves individually and accept as a part of our humanity. Sex is something we are tied to inherently, but individual sexuality is an expression of our own personal desires and beliefs. These acts are manifestations of our deepest and most personal thoughts, in our most vulnerable moments we share who we really are.

What is human about disappointment and sadness and sex?  Why is this story not just mine?
