Sunmi is a multidisciplinary cartoonist and author-illustrator of the young adult graphic novel "Firebird," published by HarperAlley in 2023. They are currently working on their second YA book "Shim Chung Lives Alone" alongside an independent zine-making and risograph printing practice that they've sustained since 2015. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, they came to Baltimore and received their BFA in Illustration from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2017, and have since illustrated for clients such as HarperCollins, Hachette, The School Library Journal, CollegeHumor, Vox Media, and The Nib. They have exhibited their art and books at galleries and trade shows across the U.S. and Canada, as well as having had work featured abroad in Seoul, Hong Kong, and Singapore. They have also been a visiting guest author for Lambda Literary's LGBTQ Writers in Schools program since 2023.
