It's a book about queer friendship, the isolation of the suburbs and failures of "The American Dream," about strenuous relationships to solo mothers and accepting your inability to meet their expectations of performing gender and class normalcy. I wrote it from my memories of all these things and especially the friends I loved, who helped me feel seen and understood throughout adolescence. But beyond that, it's also about the strange, gray areas of intimacy, the distances in families, the possibilities of relationships ending and evolving. I continue to explore lonelier, more mature themes in my upcoming book, through a college-age protagonist.
