Documenting The Aesthetic of This Baltimore Life
Sydney Jamie Allen, aka aBaltimoregriot, is a visual storyteller who is both a native and current resident of Baltimore. Allen uses portrait and documentary photography to highlight the individuals and community spaces of black folk living in Baltimore. By doing so, Allen is able to recreate the narrative of life in Baltimore city. The narratives are built on the intimacy and deep emotional truths Allen has experienced and witnessed of black people living in Baltimore. Allen desires to disrupt stereotypical black iconography and mirror a more empowering reality by redistributing these narratives to black folk in Baltimore.
Prior to COVID-19 restrictions, Allen was working to document queer night life at the monthly dance party Version along with the rest of the underground night life of Baltimore city. Allen is currently a teaching artist for a digital media program for youth.
