Yuriko's profile

I have been exhibiting my arts in juried and non-juried shows within the greater Baltimore area since 2019.   My education includes an elective art program during high school, in which my work with oil received honors.  I have been studying watercolor, drawing, and mixed media under the guidance of Diana Marta, a resident artist at the Howard County Arts Center.  My interest in art started as a child in Japan where the tradition of brush work and graphic storytelling continues to be integral to modern life. This upbringing not only nurtured my artistic sensibility but also provided me with basic skills to build upon.

Light, nature and people inspire me, and opportunities for observation are plentiful in my daily life.  I leverage my background in the field of scientific research which taught me the value of keen observation without biases. I use representational value system and shapes to give the subjects presence and to ground the compositions.  Manipulation of light, colors and textures defines the space, moods and stories that the subjects are experiencing.  This is a fluid process that involves experimentation, reassessment of concepts and willingness to depart original ideas to pursue the dynamism and energy emerging in the piece.
