I started shooting live music performances throughout Baltimore during college, primarily local bands in small venues with horrible sound quality. I expected to graduate up to bigger bands and larger venues, but as I did, I hated it. Pushing through crowds of "die-hard fans", only being allowed to shoot for a few songs, and trying to photograph a band on a large stage that is taller than me. The raw emotion and unpredictability of the local shows at DIY venues throughout the city could never be replaced by big name artists who didn't remember what town they were in.
I am honored to be founder and executive director of Musicians of Mercy (MOM) (www.musiciansofmercy.org) – a collective of over seventy musicians and artists in the Metropolitan D.C. area which raises funds for humanitarian causes through the production of benefit concerts. What started as a personal response to the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti has become my contribution to society. I merely decided to use my set of gifts to help, in some small way, a suffering people. In so doing, I discovered a greater purpose for my art form … and for myself.
Coming off the road from fronting a band for ten years, we see Matt Hutchison discovering himself again in this intimate collection of songs. It's almost like looking at a modern-day gentleman cowboy, earnestly looking West out of his East-Coast bedroom window. The dichotomy between the confident statements of "I Am," to the painfully reflective sentiments in "How Do You Like Me Now?" suggest that his journey has only just begun.
Over the last 7 years I have developed a very close relationship with the music and performance community in Baltimore. These pieces are a small representation of 3 years of poster design, event promotion and collaboration with venues, artists, musicians, and organizations.
