Motus is a collection of non-representational paintings and monotypes that capture energetic battles between motion and stillness, destruction and harmony. Using color and the material characteristics of oil-based inks, sticks, and paint, I create sublime atmospheres through various application methods, such as multiple layers, heavily textured and wiped-away marks, and intense contrasts in saturation. The chaotic color compositions appear random but are visibly controlled by an unseen force or design. I aim to evoke a sense of the sublime in each viewer, offering a glimpse into an unfathomable world that unfolds over time. By creating work intuitively, I aim to communicate with the viewer’s subconscious.
Color palettes vary from piece to piece, shifting from traditional earth tones to highly saturated pigments. The energetic bursts of movement push the eye around the composition, and record my quick hand motions and arm span, allowing viewers to stand in front of the works and feel engulfed by their size. Using abstract expressionist practices, such as spontaneous brushstrokes recording full-body movements, the layering of colors, and non-representational forms, my work creates ambiguous atmospheres that challenge spatial recognition through a constant push/pull. What remains is not a non-objective work, but an abstracted reality moving between intuition and intention.
