My artwork is concerned with countering the perception that Blackness is monolithic. Through the lens of my own Caribbean upbringing, I investigate how Black people across the Western Hemisphere are linked by the traditions of our common ancestors. I also examine how the legacies of slavery and colonialism have driven a wedge between Black communities and countries. Further, my artwork disregards cultural expectations of Black artists by integrating inspiration from my Buddhist faith and travels around Asia. I merge these varied influences into the eccentric visual language of Afro-surrealism. Each work presents a crossover of ideas, affirming that culture is itself an infinitely malleable medium.
