Out of Reach“Out of Reach” transforms an everyday object so that it becomes imbued with social significance. The front of the medicine cabinet entices viewers with a fantastical painted scene, while the inside reveals a glittering display of brightly bottled candies. Such imagery is indicative of the imaginative and naive thinking found in young children. The adult medicines are visualized as something familiar and, thus, are no longer seen as threatening. This piece speaks to the mind’s ability to manipulate hazardous materials into seemingly innocuous objects.

Drug Mandalatop view
-
Drug Mandala“Drug Mandala” plays upon the concept of the mandala— the representation of the universe in Buddhist and Hindu thought. In this Westernized interpretation, the mandala concept has been reworked into a colorful, board game-like display. A closer inspection of the geometric figures alludes to the presence of drugs— both illicit and pharmaceutical— saturated throughout the piece. “Drug Mandala” calls to attention the abundance of chemical worship in modern American society.
