I have always been curious about "Place and Travel" .My journeys began at an early age and this insatiable curiosity about cultures
and travel has given me the main focus of my work. Social justice and working with various communities from victims of domestic
abuse to prisoners, seniors and people with learning and physical difficulties in the UK and the USA. Various residencies e.g. Spain, Wales,
England, Nigeria and the States of Idaho, Utah, Nevada, S.Carolina, Delaware and the State of Maryland have resulted in social engaged Projects.
The works in these series show earlier work which still has some significance in the development of present work. Materials and new technology is important. In "Dowry Brides" shown some years ago at the Delaware Centre for Contemporary Arts I worked with the
Indian Community (India). The work shows a young girl of 12 years old forced to marry an older man. These practices are still carried on
in several parts of the world. The advertisement for marriage and the emphasis on skin colour, family background is an important part of the advertisements for marriage.
The slave trade of slaves from Ghana across the Atlantic Ocean to the New World in the early 1900s resulted in some work.
included too are the series of the "Comfort Women" created in the late 90s.
The Japanese Government as recently apologized for this outrageous acts and this news has only recently made headlines.
These works although executed several years ago are included to illustrate the development in my work. The work is mixed media using clay, wax, fabric, text and stitch.
A residency in Vermont shows work that evolved after the exhibition "Dowry Brides" and is an extension of the work i.e. "Tunnel of Fire"
which alludes to the wives throwing themselves on the pry when the husband dies. It also depicts imprisonment. The colour red signifies passion, anger, pain.

Child Bride 1.jpgThe marriage ceremony in Indian culture can be for a few days. In this instance the young girl of 12 yrs old is forced to marry an older man. Her expression is anger and innocence. The advertisements for brides is common and often degrading in my opinion. The colour Red is used in marriage to signify wealth, passion, etc. The work is mixed media using Indian fabric, accessories, text, stitch and collage. This is a detail of the large installation "Dowry Brides"

Slave Girl 1996.jpgI visited Elmira Castle in Ghana several years ago and it was an emotional journey to witness the place where the slaves were shipped to the New World across the Atlantic Ocean. The work "Slave Girl" resulted from this visit. After this journey I was invited to work in Nevada and the experience of working with various women in this State stimulated a series of works using the body to create works that addressed the prostitution situation in some parts of Nevada. Mixed Media using the body, string, plaster of Paris, clay and cowrie shells which is a symbol of fertility.

Comfort Woman.jpgThe Comfort Women series was created in the 90s. The issue of what happened in Korea at the hands of the Japanese Soldiers is only coming to light now and it was only last year that the Japanese Government has apologized for their outrageous actions. This situation was brought to my attention over 25 years ago. I continue to work on women's issues and recently created or participated in a joint quilt for FORCE UPSETTING RAPE CULTURE. The collaborative quilt was displayed at the BMA and was part of the SONDHEIM AWARD.

Dowry Brides Project.jpgThe work was created after the Dowry Brides Project in Vermont where I was an artist in residence. The colour red is used to illustrate anger, passion and fire. Some brides and newly married women have doused themselves on fire as a protest to the distressing lives they have led. I had witnessed this experience as a child growing up in Kenya. The work is mixed media using wood, string, silk and digital images.
