    This work is entirely covered with stitch and is densely layered to add form and dimension. It is shows the history of Gaza where 65,000 or more of the inhabitants have been killed. The image shows the destruction of the place and the people rushing in order to find food. It is important that the issue is brought to the attention of the Public and as an artist it is essential to bring such matters to the forefront.

    Cape Town Installation consists of 89 panels each section divided into 6 areas i.e. Humour, Townships, Sport, Neighbourhood,Slavery, and Resources.

     Place is an important part of my life and work. A visit to Cape Town,S.A was the inspiration for this work. The work is historical as well as educational w and can be arranged in any order.The surface is textile based incorporating stitch,embroidery (manual and digital) text,print and collage.

    This work which is 35ft long and 1ft wide relates to the long walk to Nogent,France. The work is created on fabric and is richly layered with paint, embroidery etc. It is placed  on the ground where the artist walked once a week in this peaceful,tranquil landscape. It also denotes the narrow path envisaged while on this walk hence the long strip of fabric i.e. work.

History of a Place

The history of Gaza and the West Bank has created demonstrations around the Globe. Included in this Project are works relating to Gaza, Cape Town, S.A. and France. Place is an important part of my life and work. The two are inseparable.

    This Section relates to the Slavery, Apartheid regime of S.A. The images illustrate the many demonstrations, prison cell where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years. The work is digitally photographed, printed and manipulated with stitch, text, created by hand and machine embroidery. Each Section depicts various parts of this interesting City.

    This image of a dress like form illustrates a form of protection i.e.the walls that surrounds the many homes and towns in Cape Town.

    The textile form is layered and sectioned to show various parts of the city and neighbourhoods i.e. townships and the Malay neighbourhood which is culturally rich and diverse. Text used is stitched and the images are embroidered on fabric and printed.

    The Malay Couple are shown in this work.  This is an interesting and cultural part of the city of Cape Town with its rich diversity i.e. mosques, temples, good food etc. The walls are created in on fabric folded, creased and pleated. Embroidery using both the manual and digital sewing computer is used.

    The Boxed Confederate

    During the last few years several monuments relating to the Civil War in the USA were removed. One of these was boxed waiting to be removed at the Montgomery County Offices in Rockville,MD. This work relates to this statue which has since been removed to Harper's Ferry in Maryland. The work is mixed media re: glass, fabric, and thread.

    Unravelling 2018

    A residency in Rockville was the outcome of several works relating to its history of slavery in the early 1800s. The ads for slaves and the removal of the Confederate Monument that was boxed waiting to be removed from the Montgomery Council Office as a result of the many demonstrations around the country. The work is a folding piece that shows text, images of the slave owner's doll and various ads by the slave captors.

    The work is textiles using hand and machine embroidery on linen.

    The research was interesting as the artist was not familiar with its history and led to finding information in The Sentinel which was the local newspaper that circulated in Montgomery/DC area during the 1800s. The work is textile based using stitch,fabric  and print to illustrate its history.

    The African American History of Rockville,MD. in the 1860s. An image of the young girl,Anne Maria Weems escaped to Canada in disguise. The text is a collaboration with a poet.

Place

The Place(s) in this Project relates to cities where the artist has lived and been influenced by the cultural diversity of the area.

The works are photographed, printed and manipulated with stitch using textiles as the background. The two cities where the artist lived and lives at present (Baltimore) are quite contrasting in both the physical and spiritual sense. The diversity in the community (London) small spaces and the weather strikes a contrast to the large space in Baltimore and also that it is not as International as London.  The works are textile based using stitch, photography and collage. Some of the old traditional ceremonies re: Pearly Kings and Queens of London and the diverse neighbourhoods is shown in this Project. The work is also educational to some degree and important in that the public who view the work can look up the various aspects of the cities in question.

    The Installation is textile based using photography and richly layered with stitch using hand and the manual sewing machine. The images show the rich cultural diversity of E. London where the artist lived for several years. Images show a mosque, hindu temple, Sikh marriage the shops etc. Each panel describes various aspects of the city. Included too is the Pearly King and Queen of London. This tradition originated in the early 19th Century and the ceremony involves the beautiful attire of buttons, beads, sequins stitched on the costumes. This is to keep the evil out and the goodness in.

    The image shows the Pearly Queen with a Sikh participant. This is now a multi cultural ceremony than what was practiced in the early 1800s. The costumes are richly decked with beads, buttons and sequins. The Pearlies as they are called raise money for Charity and is a landmark of London. The work measures 6"Hx4"Wx0.1"D.

    This part of London (Thames Barrier) has been redeveloped and parts of the landscape is planned ie (Landscape Architecture)

    The fauna that depicts this work relates to the landscape around this part of London. The landscape is planned architecture and the flowers, plants  is well structured and colourful. Social Justice/History

The work in this Project addresses Social Justice, in particular, the many killings as a result of Gun Violence and Police brutality in the USA. It also relates to the history of this country. The images are digitally photographed and manipulated with stitch on handmade felt, textiles, etc. In Memoriam Curtain had an immediate response by some viewers who have written poem, texts in relation to this large Installation.  Dimensions: 12ftHx10ftWx0.5"D  2020-2023.

The Innocent 2012-2022 relates to the victims killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut and Robb Elementary School in Uvalde,Texas. These works are circular in context (Spiritual Journey)  The work is richly layered with stitch using the sewing machine and computer. Wood (Gun) is incorporated on work -wood using the laser cutter and stitch (Text)

The removal of the Confederate monuments around the USA has resulted in demonstrations around the country. The boxed Confederate was a monument in the grounds of the Montgomery County Offices in Rockville, MD. The statue has since been removed to Harper's Ferry,MD. 

 

 

The practice of Child Brides is included in this section. The forced marriages of young children is found in many parts of the world and it is important to bring this issues to the Public's awareness.

    This large work is created on handmade felt and took a year to complete. The images of the victims are richly layered with stitch created digitally and on the manual sewing machine. The history of the country including the death of Emmet Till is shown and several other victims during the 1960s.

Migration

As a migrant of 3 countries it is an important part of my life and work. The Project includes some parts of the UK and the USA where the artist spent a greater part of her than the country of her birth which is Kenya.
