About Kashima

Kashima Robinson, a Baltimore-based artist who uses ceramics to explore the spaces between defined forms and highlight moments of self-discovery.
With a background in Ceramics and an AFA from CCBC, Kashima's practice focuses on sculptural ceramics and mosaics. Their work disrupts perceptions, creating dynamic pieces that document instances of growth and change through the intricate ceramic tiles and containers.

Shape, Shift & Mend

I use the work as a tool for projection. I'm so curious about perception. There’s a lot of work around me asking questions about where and how I exist in relation to everything and everyone else in the world. I've found that others' perceptions of me and my perception of myself are often in constant flux.

I make work around and about the idea of space, both in regard to celestial bodies like the sun and the moon, and also space as in perceived voids of matter, or emptiness. I make use of the idea of mosaics. When viewing a mosaic, we look for patterns and contexts within the defined shapes. We search for something familiar or definite to latch onto, but our perceptions are interrupted by the distance between one defined shape and the next. I’ve devoted myself to identifying and personifying what fills that empty space. If it’s air, I talk about the wind and how it acts upon the world around it. If it’s water, I talk about the vessel it’s held in or the one it’s holding. But I’m always talking about the distance or space in between.

A portrait of the sun expanded and extruded through space. This piece exists to help me talk about things that stay on the surface. In reality, the sun has no solid boundaries and no surface to touch, but it takes up space, it casts light and heat over an enormous range, and at a speed that sets the pace for everything else. We use its light along with reflections to help us define ourselves in space. It lets us see what’s on the surface, then the ends and edges of things. It's up to you to inquire beyond the horizon to see the structures supporting them.
