About Harry
My photography projects take time but time helps tell the story. I look for projects that take me to places that the photographer Walker Evans described best: "It's as though there's a wonderful secret in a certain place and I can capture it. Only I can do it at this moment, only this moment and only me."
I start out as a stranger, asking people to trust me, to let me into their world, to tell me their story. Their acceptance is a gift that I take very seriously. I share my work with them… more

Skid Row, Los Angeles
This is from Design With Love, my book documenting the work of young architects across the USA.
One of these communities is L.A.'s Skid Row, home to over 15,000 homeless men, women and children.
With a shortage of housing, many are forced to live on the sidewalks in makeshift shelters.
Many individuals and groups are trying to help but the problem is growing.

At The Border
San Ysidro is a major crossing point along the US-Mexico border. $750 million has created new buildings and inspection areas and rerouted highways. It's a place where signs warn that you are being watched and your conversations recorded. A place of congestion, tension and vibrant scenes that you'll find only here.
West Baltimore-1
This is from my latest book, Design With Love, documenting the work of young architects across the USA.
The last chapter is about Block Captain Donald Quarles, architect Daniel Greenspan and many others working in West Baltimore's Franklin Square community, reclaiming vacant lots, creating parks and community centers that enhance the neighborhood. I continue to work and document life there.

West Baltimore-2
After I finished my book project with one chapter focused on Kirby Lane Park, I began to look into other areas of West Baltimore.
Little Italy-1
Anything worth doing is worth overdoing! In 1998 I began to document life in Baltimore's Little Italy- color photographs, audio and video interviews and essays. As soon as a photo is taken it becomes part of the past. Usually that trip is gradual and unnoticed. But I soon realized that I might be photographing Little Italy's last hurrah. Many of the people and places you will see here are gone now.
When I began this project, I was told, "You should have been here 40 years ago. This place was something back then! Of course we would have thrown you out. No stranger with a camera in our Neighborhood!" But they didn't throw me out.
