About Errol

Howard County

Errol McKinson's picture
Errol W. McKinson is a resilient and vibrant artist. He was born in the glowing capital of Kingston, Jamaica. At an early age, Errol was fascinated by the works of art that surrounded him. His first experience with color was from a set of watercolor paints given to him as a gift by his father, Edgar McKinson. Throughout his high school years, Errol became extremely interested in Impressionism. Upon reading a book from the school’s library at Wolmer’s High School for Boys, he was introduced to the... more

The Coal Miners

Having been recognized as a resilient and vibrant artist, I am inspired by the warmth of nature that surrounds me. As a creator of nature on canvas, panel, or whatever the surface is, it takes discipline, will power, courage and determination to represent nature in its true form, pure! I am inspired by some of the greatest painters who have ever lived. I favor impressionism, Modern Art and Cubism because it’s a true representation of nature. Inherently, I have been a painter from creation, and as I grew older I realized that when you are chosen for a specific purpose you hold the key to your destiny.
My process is a very simple one, which I believe leads to a great end result. After careful observation of the motif, weather for time of day, weather or season, and most of all the narrative within. I then sketch directly with paint onto the canvas, panel, board or wall depending on the surface. As I proceed, I paint what I see within the light key which transforms the object to life.
Currently, my overall body of work is represented in a total of 16 series; The Coal Miner, Cuban Experience, Modern Art meets Cubism, Trench Town Rock Experience, A Look at DC, Water Lilies at Giverny and Weeping Willows,  just to name a few. These are mainly from life experience throughout my travels as I capture nature and people.

Cuban Experience

The Cuban Experience is my new series featuring  the lifestyles of  Cuban women smoking Cigars. Carlotta the Cigar vendor. The Jurior's Choice Award at  Art Howard County 2021 exhibition. You pull open the glass door of the cigar shop, your eyes drawn to the dark wood of the walls, the array of picturesque cigar boxes and the small, circular bar, where a server in a bow tie stands ready before a lineup of aged rums. The aroma of rich cigar smoke rises into the air as you head toward the humidor, filled with boxes of cedar bearing some of the most famous names in the cigar world: Cohiba, Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta. Time to buy a cigar. If you're a cigar aficionado, your bucket list has to include buying a Cuban cigar in Havana.

Modern Art Meets Cubism

Welcome to my new Series, Modern Arts meets Cubism (MAMC). This series is a combination of works influenced by Paul Cezanne and Pablo Picasso. I have been inspired by Cezanne from my youthful days and some one I truly admire for his uniqueness. With such admiration I have incorporated the use of his technique along with a blend of Picasso to express the new form of modern arts. My way, My style!  The series is comprised of over 30 paintings which is an ongoing process. The paintings are ranging in sizes from 12 x 12 x 2 - 48 x 48 x 2 canvas and panels.

Modern Art Meets Cubism - At The Asylum

For over a decade, I have been recognized in art shows and through online galleries as a resilient and vibrant artist. In my pieces, you’ll see the reflection of the greatest impressionists and I’m currently exploring a variety of methods seeking to invent the hidden secrets of Modern Art and Cubism. Most recently, my work has focused on giving a voice to the voiceless. From that perspective, my latest series, Modern Art Meets Cubism - At The Asylum is a full representation of what life is like in such a dark world. Today, as a country, we struggle to deal with the conditions of mental illness now affecting one in five Americans per year. Clinical Depression and Anxiety Disorder are the most common. This Series was created using the following materials; Gallery Wrap Canvas,  Woodebn Panels,  Oil Paints , Marble Dust, Chalk etc... These were all created in 2023.
