About Leonard C.
Leonard C. Wilson is a Baltimore digital artist who creates visual works that focus on visual variations, rhythms and patterns. From the very beginning of his explorations in the arts he explains: "I have always believed there are visual rhythms which are powerful enough to lead us to archetypal experiences that can reveal the deeper mysteries of where we are from (Origin), what we are (Identity) and where we could go (Evolution)".
Since 2013 Leonard's digital artwork has focused… more
Variants I: Affine Expansion I
VARIANTS: A Contemporary Study of Visual Variation and Human Aesthetics
An Artist Statement Written by Leonard C. Wilson
Objective:
The main motivation of the work is to map new visual territories utilizing iterative computation via customized fractal software. By utilizing the power of modern computers to explore the visual limits of variation new phenomena can be realized and codified to create unfamiliar visual experiences.
Process:
The approach in creating the work is performed by rendering an initial sequence (the seed) and applying to it very specific transformations in order to produce sets of image variations (50 in total per set) using customized fractal software.
Currently Variants is a total series of 500 fractal images containing 10 sets (Variants I through X) of 50 fractal images each which are derived from an original iterative calculation and subsequently altered using specific routines to produce variations from the original calculation.
Concept:
Variants is a series of 500 individual fractal images, however each set of 50 is conceptually considered to be a complete work. Although the individual fractal images are visually stunning on their own as a single piece of art, it is the overall progression that is produced by the current process which is of major concern.
The main argument of the total work is to demonstrate the possibilities of current computational capabilities and human artistic sensibilities so that a new dialog can be opened in the area of time, chaos, power and repetition which are only a few of the basic conceptual building blocks used in the creation of the work.
Presentation:
Because of the scope the work and the limitations placed on physical presentation a smaller series will be curated to demonstrate the visual possibilities of the whole.
Each image will be presented using the dye sublimation process on aluminium sheets and mounted on Dibond® composite material for structural support.
The titles are an evolving alphanumeric indexing system that gives reference to the entire series, the sets within the series, the color combinations and the visual sequences.
