  • PTSS- Works Sample from "Dizzy Spellz"

This is an excerpt from a show called “Dizzy Spellz” that I conceived in collaboration with my trumpeter/composer Sean Jones. At this point in the show we are closing out “Swing Lo, Sweet Cadillac “ to transition into “I’ll Fly Away” which is a set up for an original piece called “PTSS” ( Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome). This work was inspired by Dr. Joy DeGruy and her work to bring awareness and dialogue about the culture identity , mental, spiritual, and physical crisis that Black Americans are perpetually in as a result of American Slavery. In the band Alex Brown on piano Kris Funn on bass Mark Whitfield, Jr. on drums Wendel Patrick on turntables, beatboxing and effects Sean Jones on trumpet, Brinae Ali on vocal, dance, and spoken word

  • Jubilee

Jubilee is a commissioned piece by Spongebob on Broadway director Tina Landau for her production called "The Big Mix-Juneteenth". The intentionality of the work pays homage to enslaved Africans who use their bodies and voices to communicate and express their need for freedom. Brinae collaborates with musician/composer Tamar Kali who is a second generation Gullah Geechee to create a montage of rhythm and harmony layering a Ring Shout traditional song, clave, Tap dance, body percussion, and original storytelling about the Stono Rebellion and Juneteeth. This performance took place at Little Island in NYC.
