You Cannot Have This Place

You Cannot Have This Place is a portrait of a man, my father, in his home of nearly a century. It is also a record of this land and these woods. Of corners of his rooms. Of his molds spreading beneath paint. Of maintenance. Of things cut down and grown and cut down again, or of wondering when and where they will fall. Of things built and things buried, of things bloomed or blown up, of things dropped and forgotten, lost in the weeds. And of the accumulated ghosts of generations of children playing in the dirt, of dead dogs and deer, of ex wives and widows, of cars rotting under leaves, of coming and going, of ancestors. Of things no one wants and no one can have. But for my singular desperation for it, for another hundred years. And of the end in sight.

I only wish I could be around to plan my funeral with you

This is a photographic project that visually explores themes of memory, fear, loss, and a conversation I had with my father in 2017. It is shot on 35mm film at various points past expiration.

wild blue yonder

"The wild blue yonder came upon us like a drunken zoom lens thundering into focus. It seemed that God had made up His mind to change the background without telling anyone." -- Eve Babitz, Slow Days, Fast Company: The World, The Flesh, and L.A.

This selection is from a larger series of photographs inspired by Babitz. It was shot on a combination of 35mm and digital and has been collected and published in a zine by the same name.
