Timothy's profile

Timothy Nohe’s artistic practice is rooted in a DIY ethos shaped by Punk culture and early hacker communities, emphasizing collaboration, hands-on problem-solving, and public engagement. This philosophy informs his work across music, visual arts, and performance, often extending beyond traditional art spaces. Based in Baltimore, Nohe’s creative pursuits span exhibitions, screenings, and performances in Australia, Singapore and Europe.

Collaboration has been central to Nohe’s practice. Over 20 years of partnerships with dance companies such as LucidBeings Dance, Deep Vision Dance, Catey Ott Dance Collective, and Baltimore Dance Project have infused his works with improvisation on traditional and electronic instruments. This influence is evident in his video, glitch art, and immersive sound scores.

Nohe’s recent projects explore analog technologies like modular synthesizers and magnetic tape editing. Embracing the tactile nature of these tools, he bridges analog and digital processes to create works. A 2015 residency at Signal Culture in Owego, NY, catalyzed his integration of sound composition and visual media, resulting in works like "CosmonautOp" (2016). These creations have been showcased in venues such as the Louvre Museum and Centre Pompidou, and featured in Russia’s Currents EXPERIMENT - Фестиваль 2022 cinema dance festival.

Nohe’s electronic media investigations have appeared in public art festivals like Light City 2017 ("Electron Drawing – Visual Music") and exhibitions at Kohl Gallery and the Electronic Gallery. His Baker Artist Awards portfolio captures this period, highlighting his engagement with handmade circuits and analog media subcultures. In the realm of dance he has presented at venues such as the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, The Oxfringe Festival, MKE Fringe Festival, Maryland Public Television, Dance Place, the Theater Project, etc.

In recent years, Nohe has engaged in speculative art, utilizing natural language AI image generation seeded with his own images. Nohe's work continues to embody curiosity and innovation, reaffirming his commitment to collaboration, improvisation, and the evolving possibilities of art and technology.
