Kathy's profile
Exploring objects and textures in nature and capturing the drama of light outdoors have inspired my artwork for as long as I can remember; and until a couple of years ago, I worked predominantly in oils and pastels. I am also a knitter and raised sheep for more than a decade. As a result, I accumulated a collection of wool roving and yarn. In late 2018, I tried using wool roving and yarn to create my first felted landscape. I was pleased with the result and loved the process of using wool to lay down colors instead of paint. Since then I have continued to explore how I can use wool to make landscapes and how I can use felting needles to control line and shading. I have expanded my collection of wool and now have a wide range of colors and my "palette" is extensive. It has been a self taught journey. Currently I am exploring how to incorporate into my feltings things that I find while walking outdoors (pieces of wood, lichen, fungi, etc.) The journey is young and constantly evolving. My portfolio also has ink drawings, including a series of ammonites. The structure of an ammonite holds mystery and symbolism - a beginning and an end - and each drawing is a meditation for me.
