Ruth's profile

RUTH MARGRAFF’s plays sit in the edges of opera and art. She’s critically acclaimed for her six martial arts operas with Fred Ho for the Apollo, Guggenheim Museum, LaMama, Brooklyn Academy of Music and a CAMI tour to 33 US cities in 2003.  Margraff’s monologue for Farida Azizi in SEVEN was introduced by Diane von Furstenberg, Hillary Clinton and Meryl Streep at the Broadway Hudson Theater in 2010, performed in more than 30 countries and translated into 20+ languages. Ruth has received awards from Rockefeller, McKnight, Jerome, NEA, TCG, TMUNY, NYSCA, IAC, MASS MoCA, Fulbright, etc; and is published by Innova Records, Dramatists Play Service, American Theatre, Theater Forum, Performing Arts Journal, TDR, Applause, Backstage and Lexington Books, Playscripts, Autonomedia, New Village Press among others. She's a Chicago Dramatist and alum of Theater Without Borders, New Dramatists and the Playwrights’ Center, and is a Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

  •  MIRROR BUTTERFLY: migration liberation suite a jazz opera that unites the music and stories of climate refugees from Mexico, Syria, and West Africa. Performed by the Afro Yaqui Music Collective, an indigenous-jazz band led by Gizelxanath Rodriguez, Ben Barson and Samuel Okoh-Boateng featuring interviews with former Black Panther Mama C exiled in Tanzania, Wanlove a kubolor from Ghana, and Azize an activist working with Syrian Rojava and Mexican Zapatistas. Developed by New Hazlett Theater (Pittsburgh) Oct 11-12, 2018 directed by Cynthia Croot, conducted by Federico Garcia-De Castro, Season 6 of the CSA series in dialogue with Indigenous People’s Day. The live score features a 15-piece jazz band, three choral singers, and the hip-hop stylings of Nejma Nefertiti. Concert staging at the Kennedy Center Millenium Stage November 23, 2018  (Washington DC); Nov 4, 2018 National Ensemble Theater plenary showcase (Tucson); 1st Mesopotamian Water Forum Apr 6-8, 2019 (Kurdistan, Iraq); and released on Innova Records at Red Rooster/Ginny's Supper Club (Harlem); on Aug 3, 2019.  Excerpts featured on howlround, the New Sounds playlist, on 91.3 WYEP Aug 27, 2019 with Yaqui Námakasia Radio, which received all CD sales, and National Jazz Museum in Harlem on October 3, 2019 as part of the Jazz and Social Justice salon.
