Gavin Coates is a contemporary painter and visual artist based in Columbia, Maryland, and born in Wiesbaden, Germany. His practice ranges from landscape and figurative painting to psychologically charged and symbolic imagery, with recurring attention to perception, memory, nature, and the relationship between observed and imagined experience. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including the Chelsea International Art Competition at Agora Gallery in New York, Art Revolution Taipei at the Taipei World Trade Center, and exhibitions with Colors of Humanity Art Gallery and Art on the Terrace. In 2023, his painting Chess Players received a Noteworthy Mention in Colors of Humanity’s Human Nature exhibition. Coates is also the founder of Naturalist Gallery of Contemporary Art, where he develops exhibitions, curates contemporary artwork, and publishes artist-focused editorial material. He maintains an independent studio practice in Maryland.
