Imani's profile
Imani Muleyyar is an award-winning multimedia storyteller, educator, and arts advocate. He began his arts career by producing socially conscious music to combat negative stereotypes in the black community during the 1990s. This led Imani to pursue a profession in audio engineering, studying at American University in Washington, DC and opening multiple recording studios to promote positive messages in impoverished neighborhoods throughout Baltimore.
During the downturn of the music industry in the late 2000s, Imani joined the Army Reserves and served in the Iraq war to fund the rest of his education. Upon returning, he transitioned from audio to video production, acquiring academic degrees in both TV and film. He developed a love for visual storytelling which led him to independently produce dozens of documentary shorts, winning numerous film festival awards. Eventually he landed producer / editor jobs at Fox 45 Baltimore, NBC Sports Washington and the UFC, and won multiple Emmy Awards for his documentary programs.
Imani returned to his alma mater American University in the 2010s where he discovered he also had a passion for teaching. Working as a production manager for the School of Communication, he hosted production workshops for students, staff and faculty. Since then, Imani has spent his free time volunteering to teach media production, computer literacy, and business administration to underserved communities.
Imani returned to Baltimore in 2022 to bring his knowledge and experience to the same impoverished neighborhoods where he started his arts career. He launched Imani Network, a media platform telling the stories of underrepresented populations. Imani also launched an incubator program to teach these same populations media production skills, in an effort to build a workforce of TV and film professionals in the city. Imani intends to spend the remainder of his career combining his love of storytelling with his passion for teaching to ultimately better the lives of the inhabitants of Baltimore.
