Alex French is a Baltimore-based artist and curator. He received his B.A. in Studio Art from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, NC in 2008 and studied under William Behnken, Michael Grimaldi, and the late WPA Artist Anthony Palumbo, among others, at the Art Students League of New York. In 2008, he worked for the artist SWOON in New York for the installation/performance/play/flotilla entitled Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea at Deitch Projects, Jeffrey Deitch Gallery, New York. After years of working and studying at the Art Students League of NY, riding bikes and hounding art all over NYC, he returned to his home city of Baltimore. French's art has been exhibited in Maryland; Washington, D.C.; Memphis, TN; North Carolina; New Orleans; New Jersey; and New York City; and is in several private collections.
As a Curator, French brings diverse perspectives together, often rooted in a sense of place, to engage in issues of empathy, collaboration and interdependence. His curatorial projects include LAUNCH, Function Gallery's inaugural exhibition in Baltimore City; the Inaugural and 2nd Annual Madonnari Arts Festival in Little Italy, Baltimore; ROOTS/RAICES Buenos Aires and Baltimore street artist exhibition and cultural exchange; BLOOD RED invitational exhibition at Howard Community College; Sowebo/Soweto, Martha Cooper solo photography exhibition; and NYC vs. BMORE group exhibition.
