Andy's profile
My work ventures beyond traditional boundaries of landscape painting to develop new techniques of depiction. The central question of my recent work has been: "What makes a painting recognizable as a landscape?" Inherently, we recognize shapes, forms, colors and textures as indicative of "landscapes." I explore that inherent visual language of landscape through expressive, gestural, and experimental uses of paint, materials, color, value, dimension, and format. Each scene is brought to fruition through processes by which my position of control as the artist exists in parallel to the nature of the material. This relationship creates moments within the work that push past reality and into the realm of interpretation, broadening the scope of "place" present in each piece. When approaching each piece, ask yourself: "have I been here before?”
