Sydney J. Allen

b. 1992

Artistically known as aBaltimoreGriot, Sydney J. Allen is a black femme photographer, writer, and arts educator.

Allen works from the ideology of “The Personal Is Political.” She recognizes that her identity is inherently political and thus the photographic work she creates is a form of resistance.

She seeks to accentuate individuals systemically impacted by their marginalized identities through digital and film portraiture. Additionally she emphasizes her experiences living and growing up as a black woman in Baltimore via documentary photography.

Allen is currently an after school photography teacher and a contributing photographer and occasional contributing writer to the Baltimore Beat.

Following the ending of the monthly queer dance party- VERSION, which she had documented for almost seven years, Allen now seeks to archive her work and turn her photographic lens intimately inward.
