Em Sea's profile

“Birthed from an ancient world where families ate dinner together and hip hop was thought of as a fad, I emerged as a poet. Often offbeat and nerdy, my writing reflects my surroundings like water naturally reflects the sun.” – Em Sea Water

Pushing the margins of spoken word since his 2005 release, The Love Life EP, Water remains a prominent poet with purpose. His sophomore album, Hydrology, earned “Album of The Year” at the 2007 People’s Poetry Awards. Then in 2009, Water worked with Grasshopper Philms for his breakthrough music video, "The Box Theory" and was later invited to The Visionary Arts Awards to perform an original poem in recognition of Geoffrey Canada and his Harlem Children Zone in 2010.

Later that year, Em Sea Water released a new recording of jazz, soul, poetry, and hip hop called, Nostalgia, featuring his balanced style of rap and spoken word. Water later found ways to use his music to inspire students with “My Pencil” music video that went viral on YouTube and appeared in almost every classroom in Maryland. Soon, Em Sea Water met folk singer, Nicole Zell, who he collaborated with on The Whoopies EP, released in May 2011. Water continued to release solo projects such as Remembering Neptune in 2013 and was featured in XXL Magazine as an upcoming artists from Baltimore, MD.

Earning the name "Water" from his natural ability to reflect surroundings much like the ocean naturally reflects the sun. His poetry is openly personal, as his thoughts are often transparent; like water. Also recognizing his art as a gift from God, much like the gift of life is compared to water in The Bible (John 4). He also shares his gift by using his poetry and life experience to positively mentor and educate youth. As a graduate of Coppin State University, a public school teacher, and a member of The Maryland State Arts Council, Baltimore functions as Water’s muse for creating art. A multifaceted channel that absorbs the images of his culture, Em Sea Water remains one of the most versatile writers of his generation. He currently works as Regional Coordinator of Poetry Out Loud, a National High School Poetry Recitation Competition, and is completing his first poetry book scheduled for release in 2014.
