Bruce's profile

I examine historical and contemporary workers and labor systems, using photography, installations, and community engagements. My art practice is a space to explore more inclusive ways to examine and understand how communities structure and define the value of a worker.

Materially, I use alternative photo processes to create images that examine alternative labor models. Employee-owned, family-run, barter network, Gift Economy, and skill sharing are examples of alternative business options that could foster more equitable, accessible, and diverse work practices and policies. Pinhole, time-lapse, cyanotypes, chlorophyll prints, and camera obscuras are examples of alternative photo processes that I use.

I have no formal training in the arts but have learned from many, many artists, historians, activists, and of course, workers. I have an undergraduate and graduate degree in Economics but never pursued a career in that field.

My work has received support from the Cultural Affairs Department of Paris, The Florence Gould Foundation, The Smithsonian Museum of American History, the Maryland State Arts Council, the Baltimore Office for Promotion and Arts, et al.

I have lived in the USA, Central America, France, Germany, and India and currently live in an artist co-op in Baltimore MD.
