virginia's profile

Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, I am the youngest of nine children who were all encouraged to draw, paint, and look to nature for inspiration. My parents would take us for Sunday rides in the Maryland countryside and stop at every farmer’s market to take in the sights and flavors of what is native to Maryland. These moments of capturing the beauty in nature would inspire my work for a lifetime. Also, I developed a passion for textiles and sewing from my mother, making my own clothing since I was 10 years old.
I received a BA from Loyola University/College of Notre Dame, Baltimore in 1978. Married in 1978, I embraced motherhood in 1979 and enjoyed raising 5 children with my husband in Stewartstown, PA. I enrolled in various art classes to continue my drawing and painting. In 1991, I applied and was selected for the Catholic Fellowship Program, a program designed to attract skilled teachers into Catholic schools with the benefit of a Master’s degree in Education from Loyola University. I taught Art at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen Elementary/Middle School in Baltimore for 11 years. Painting murals in private homes and businesses and sewing as a home decorator kept me busy during this time.
In 2003, I started teaching Art at Loyola Blakefield in Baltimore. As a Drawing and Painting instructor at a high school level in a Jesuit school, I am home. Inspired by my family, faith, co-workers and my students, I am continuously inspired to make art.
As a teacher, my goal is to teach my students to see the world through a new lens. My goal as an artist, despite the years of experience, is to do the same. Nature continues to be my inspiration in most of my work. Printmaking and sewing are my primary focus at this time. Combining paint, ink and natural fibers is a soothing and natural progression for me. My pieces are as complicated or simply stated as I feel. My materials are often re-purposed involving “the love of the hunt”. The unique juxtaposition of color and texture in conjunction with creativity and workmanship is what I hope will identify my work.
