Andrea's profile
As a native of Baltimore, I had studied painting at the Maryland Institute of Art, The Towson Fine Art School, Harford Community College and over the years, continued my studies with a variety of professional artists and instructors.
My early paintings were traditional realism rendered in oils but eventually I chose to explore the possibilities of watercolor and began exhibiting my work professionally in 1984. During this period I gained acceptance into many juried competitions and had won numerous awards. As an active member of several watercolor societies I helped establish and run a co-operative gallery in Baltimore for four years.
In 1996, watercolor led to mixed media and I began to destroy and re-purpose unresolved paintings. I then began adding three-dimensional aspects to my work. These collages evolved into wall-hung dioramas that incorporated painted papers and fabrics, found objects, and small hand-built sculptures which I continued to explore until 2003.
After an extended hiatus, I resumed two-dimensional painting primarily in acrylic with some mixed media. This body of work was on exhibit at Fleckenstein Gallery in Baltimore for five years.
Currently I am painting in encaustic and energized by the unpredictability and luminosity of this new medium.
I have worked as a muralist/decorative painter since 1995 and continue to do so now on a limited basis.
