Ayana's profile
I am Ayana Harris, a Baltimore-based fashion designer and creative director specializing in apparel design, styling, creative direction, event decorating, and interior decorating. I also have a strong background in marketing. My design journey began at the age of 8, inspired by my seamstress mother, who helped bring my early creative visions to life. Together, we laid the foundation for my passion for fashion.
As a young designer, I designed costumes for my local marching band, sketched outfits for friends, and participated in high school fashion shows. By the age of 15, I had gained valuable experience working for major retailers like H&M, Victoria’s Secret, and Janie & Jack, where I learned visual merchandising and refined my understanding of the fashion industry. These early experiences taught me the powerful role clothing plays in shaping self-esteem and personal identity.
In 2013, I founded Zari Emerson, a brand dedicated to creating whimsical, timeless, and unique children's apparel. While I design for all age groups, my focus on children's fashion comes from a desire to offer timeless styles that can be cherished and passed down. For adults, I use my styling skills to help friends and family repurpose their wardrobes, creating fresh and elevated looks.
I also work closely with young girls in my community, curating fashion shows that help them build self-esteem and confidence. These productions are designed to be different, offering a fresh and unique perspective in the fashion market while empowering the next generation.
In 2018, I advanced my craft at the Austin School for Design, where I learned advanced sewing and draping techniques, interned with industry professionals, and taught children how to sew. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to achieve several milestones, including bringing children from Baltimore to experience New York Fashion Week, being featured in the September 2018 issue of MOCHA Magazine, and having my work captured by the renowned Creative Soul Photography.
Through my work, I aim to inspire confidence, creativity, and individuality, making a lasting impact on the world of fashion.
