Richelle Robinson, also known as Chelly, is a Visual Painter who was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. Since a young child, Chelly has a strong passion for the visual arts and decided to pursue her career in that field. During which, she focuses on the genre of Realism.
Throughout her time as an upcoming artist, she studied drawing/illustration and fell instantly in love with oil painting as her primary medium. She focuses on subjects such as landscapes, portraits, and still life with a strong degree of accuracy, striving to depict objects as they appear in everyday life. Her works reflects a deep appreciation for detail, light, and texture, using fine brushwork and precise observation to capture moments of natural beauty and human emotion.
In December 2017, Chelly received her Bachelor’s degree in Multi-Media Studio Track at Morgan State University, where she had also studied several other forms of visual arts to expand her willingness to learn new things and strengthen her skills as a fine artist. Throughout her years at Morgan, Chelly had participated in many art exhibitions located in Carl J. Murphy Fine Arts Center, involving many students who are on their way to graduating including Junior/Senior Portfolio Student Art Exhibition (2015/2017) and post-graduate Morgan State Fine Arts Alumni Association (2018). As of recent years, she collaborated with other visual artists throughout the city of Baltimore, showcasing her artworks at Mona Lisa’s Juke Joint (February 2023), Mona Lisa’s Juke Joint: The Return (August 2023) at the Baltimore Unity Hall and GoodTimes: A Black Art Experience (February 2024).
Chelly continues to further her education, gaining her experiences in other painting mediums, graphic design, digital painting, and photography as she has recently classified herself to be a multidisciplinary visual artist. She has recently adopted Abstract Realism into her recent works, revealing a hybrid approach to incorporate abstract elements to stray from the strict rules of realism and express the freedom to explore deeper symbolic or emotional layers, while still blending recognizable references to the physical world.
Artist Bio:
“My work of art is a constant search for the best way to interpret the world that we live in and how I see myself living in it. Since I was a child, I have always been attracted to the visual arts, inspired by colors, shapes, and objects just to name a few. According to many people, no one, including myself, are no strangers of getting lost inside the paintings I have created. My understanding of perspective and composition, along with smooth brushstrokes, shading and layer blending, evokes a sense of stillness, introspection, or contemplation, allowing viewers to engage with the familiar in new, profound ways. Many of my traditional paintings follows the same technical proficiency of capturing lifelike images. However, ideas and inspirations change overtime. Each piece I have created is simultaneously an extension from my past, where I have come from, what I have learned, as well as where I am going. I am able to express myself more freely as an artist. Although I am mostly known for painting, I also create works using other art materials so I do not limit myself into working only with only one medium. Styles can vary, but the concept of my own art remains the same. I believe, like most people, that art must have a meaning, but I also believe in the fact that art does not necessarily need one. It is pure play without judgment. My collection is a continuing experience of learning new things in life and to revisit the child-like joy for what I am heavily passionate about. If a viewer stops for just a moment and lets the art speak for itself, then I have succeeded.”
