Lite's profile

Lite Zhang (b. 1998, China) is a New York and Baltimore based artist who is interested in space and audience interaction. He received an MFA degree in Rinehart School of Sculpture at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in spring 2024 and is an alumnus of the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture (Class of 2025). 

 

Zhang's installations engage different senses, including auditory, tactile, and immersive components, while exploring the infinite possibilities of materials, found objects to reflect social phenomena. He has shown in New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Rockville, and Baltimore, Maryland, including cutting-edge galleries like Liu Shiming Art Gallery, PS122 Gallery, Current Space, AREA 405, and VisArts.

The installation explores my artistic journey and influence of my cultural background. Cardboard, the chosen material, emphasizes accessibility and transformation in art-making. The white painted walls symbolize the artist adapting to the art world, while the lion's head represents cultural exchange and the artist's heritage. This installation is a sequel to my driftwood series. I see it as a continuation of life, by anthropomorphizing the surface of driftwood and covering it with paper cut fuzz. They  also suspended in the space with red ambient lighting and the background sound of  chainsaws cutting through the wood.

My installation explores the tensions between two cultures, China and the United States. Inspired by the feeling of being caught between these worlds, I use dunnage bags to represent cultural clashes. The installation creates a physical and metaphorical barrier, inviting viewers to contemplate the complexities of our globalized world.

This public art installation is a collaboration between me and the Maryland Institute College of Art. I transformed the lawn of Cohen Plaza into a giant wall lable and titled the work Title. What constitutes an art education and what would be the title after receiving an art education?

This inflatable installation art uses a Chinese wedding symbol to represent the decline of marriage rates in China. The piece, covered in soapy water and self-sustained by a pump, symbolizes the challenges faced by young people in today's society.

This is the column I created with the original stoplight. I wanted to express the questioning of the present human civilization. The light bulb goes from top to bottom from bright to dim, thus creating a visual wandering of the viewer, while questioning what is the perfect system and what is the order that human beings are looking for.

This installation is my response to the Francis Scott Key Bridge accident. At the top is the iconic Maryland crab cage, and shut in the center is the amber strobe light representing the construction crew flashing in random bursts. The whole is crashed to the ground by the heavy masonry.
