Rosemary's profile

My writing was first published in Baltimore Magazine...but in 1998, recovering from an injurious auto accident, I found my true "home" in playwriting.

Since then, my plays have been produced more than 400 times on 4 continents and in 45 states---and I'm aiming for productions in the final 5!

12 of my comedies are available through publishers, but my plays also appear in online journals and a half-dozen anthologies.

Writing in an anthropomorphic vein has become a real niche. I've given angst and human preoccupations to cockroaches (in a research lab), socks (left behind in a dryer), fruit (facing decay in a fruit bowl), cicadas (facing a limited lifespan), and lobsters (trying to avoid a cookpot.)

I have ventured into musical theatre, writing the songs, lyrics, and book of Judy And The General, a flippant take on the biblical story of Judith and Holofernes, and thoroughly enjoyed seeing it come to life on a Baltimore stage. Wherever my work appears---on the boards or in print---I delight in making people laugh.

Still, the challenge of writing drama is also a joy. I've written award-winning plays on women in war, the Holocaust, school shootings, incest, the Italian internment in WWII, and the highs and lows of life as a garbageman. Three of my full-length dramas have been honored with artist grants from the Maryland State Arts Council and my work is in university libraries from Harvard to the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.

My next chapter? Several options. I look forward to adapting one of my plays into another musical, expanding my short drama on racism into a full-length work, and completing a script based on my experiences working at a refugee camp in Greece.

I am a proud member of The Dramatists Guild of America and as a retired broadcaster, I also hold long-standing membership in SAG/AFTRA.
