Tim's profile

I have a BFA from Wittenberg University and MS from the University of Michigan, and, am currently a Professor and Medical Illustrator teaching and illustrating for 38 years in the graduate program of the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland. I have received over 40 regional and national awards for my artwork published in textbooks, magazines, and professional journals. Projects have included multiple (20+) surgical texts and atlases on Otolaryngology, Orthopedics, Surgical Pathology, and Cardiac Surgery along with 1000’s of illustrations for disciplines across basic science and medical research throughout the JHU community. I am a Past President and Past Chair of the Board of the Governors for the Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI) and I received the Max Broedel Award for Excellence in Education from the same association in 2015. I was honored and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the AMI in summer 2023. The purpose of the this Award is “to acknowledge and honor a medical illustrator who has been a Professional AMI Member for at least 30 continuous years, and whose life, work and accomplishments have significantly contributed to the profession and fellow illustrators. This award is the highest honor bestowed by the AMI to an individual, reaching beyond the service awards and the list of charter and distinguished members, to recognize a special person who has enriched our lives and influenced our ideals.”

For the past 12 years, I have been exploring the significance of mandalas and mindfulness culminating in a two-volume “Wonders” series of 11 x 11 inch full color books of nature mandalas published by Schiffer Publishing (2016) that celebrates the earth’s biodiversity and conservancy efforts to save it. A set of nature mandala coloring books (April 2017) followed. To date I have created over 1400 nature inspired images that can be viewed on my website @ phelpsmandala.com. Each of the nature images you will find there are at least 30 x 30 inches and ready for display and exhibition. Currently 17 large framed nature mandala prints are on permanent installation in 2 patient care areas at Johns Hopkins Hospital: in the Department of Radiation Oncology @ Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center (6 donated in 2022) and on the 4th floor of the Skip Viragh Cancer Building (11 donated in 2015) all @ Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore MD.

Please visit my website blog (phelpsmandala.com) to learn more about my art and creative process, inspirations, and my thoughts on nature. You will find much more about me viewing the nature projects found within this setting. I hope you enjoy this delightful eco-trip you are about to take as I encourage you to wander with wonder in nature.
