Baker Artist Portfolios

My intent is to create an experience that reflects phenomena seen in light and shadow, the subtle and fleeting occurrence of color, shape and form over time. Though abstractions, the work is informed by nature, like the light coming through an Autumn leaf or the qualities of clouds while in flight.  I continue to explore translucency, which has become an increasingly important element of my paintings where I leverage the effects of ambient light to create shifting experiences, both visual and visceral.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Joseph Gerlak received a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University.  He has participated in group and juried shows at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Anderson Gallery, Delaplaine Arts Center, and Creative Alliance.  Joseph lives and works in Baltimore.
