Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and raised in Portland, Oregon, sara kaltwasser is a multidisciplinary artist and community art educator based in Baltimore, Maryland. Her practice is rooted in art education, history, socially engaged art, and collective community development.
Working across painting, installation, collage, assemblage, sculpture, and research, sara explores the intersections of art, education, history, and activism. Her work often examines the dynamics of power within learning spaces and the aesthetics of knowledge. In recent textual projects, she has created works that chronicle history in real time—serving as a living archive of the present moment. She views teaching and community engagement as extensions of her creative practice. sara has worked with people of all ages as part of her artistic practice, creating spaces that foster intergenerational learning and creative activation.
sara earned her BFA in Painting and Drawing from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2006, where she focused on classical painting and art history. She later received her MFA in Community Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2018. Her work and teaching have been recognized through the Libby Bowerman ’82 Teaching Fellowship at Keswick Multi-Care Center (2017–2018), as well as semi-finalist honors for the Janet & Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize in 2019 and 2021.
