Abby's profile

Baltimore singer/songwriter, producer, poet, & multi-instrumentalist Abby Becker’s projects range from indie rock to cinematic chamber to avant garde theatrics. She credits her musical adventures to a diverse and unique musical childhood, one informed by the square dances and old-time music of her native West Virginia, her father’s professional experience with both Debussy and Chicago Blues, and her upbringing in community theater, including the radical Yiddish theater tradition. A classically trained violinist raised in the Klezmer and Appalachian music traditions, she currently leads the band Cora Sone (indie rock) performs with Trucker Talk (chamber transport for film/puppets), and produces daringly eclectic, interdisciplinary events for her adopted hometown, Baltimore City.

Becker's artistic practice includes the production of large scale, fiercely inclusive, multi-media performances and community events, rooted in her educational background in Peace Studies and socialist upbringing. She most recently wrote the libretto and served as vocal director/band member for the Gold Night, an original feature length rock opera produced by the Baltimore Rock Opera Society. At the onset of the pandemic, April 2019, Becker co-created, produced, and served as artistic director for The Great Baltimore Telethon for The Mobtown Ballroom, a livestream fundraiser with 60 participating Baltimore artists. This event became Mobtown Live, a weekly public access-style variety show that brought a distinct mix of livestream performances, low budget hijinks, and meaningful interviews to a dedicated following stuck at home.

Becker has performed with some of world's leading Klezmer musicians and appeared on bills with Caleb Stine, Eze Jackson, Upper Wilds, and War on Women. She was formerly a member of Haint Blue, and Sweet Saro. She is currently workin on on a full-length album with her band, Cora Sone.
